As is tradition, top two teams from every group qualify for the Round of 16 and four best third-placed teams across groups.
Which teams qualified for the Euro 2024 Round 16?
With the group stage completed, 12 teams have been confirmed from the top-two finishes in respective groups with four more entering as the best third-placed teams.
Qualifying in the Round 16 (as top two in groups) are –
Germany.
Switzerland.
Spain.
Italy.
England.
Denmark.
Austria.
France.
Romania.
Belgium.
Portugal.
Turkey.
Qualifying for the Round of 16 (as best third-placed teams):
France, Netherlands, and England have qualified for the round of 16 in the Euro 2024 tournament. The teams’ qualification was confirmed after Albania lost 1-0 to Spain in their last match of Group B.
The three nations secured the spots in the round of 16 after finishing top two and third placed respectively in their various groups.
France is on four points, England on five points, and Netherlands have four points, which they secured from their recently concluded matches on Wednesday. The English team had a 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Group A, Les Blues drew 1-1 with Poland, while Netherlands lost 2-3 to Austria to emerge as a third-placed team.
In a shocking twist, Austria topped Group D, beating out France who were predicted as group favourites. Austria had 6 points, while Netherlands secured a third-placed finish.
England won Group A despite not winning Slovenia outrightly, Denmark did not beat Serbia but they are in second place for this group, while Slovenia also shares points with the Danish team.
Netherlands joined the round of 16 despite losing to Austria but did not end up in top two as previously predicted, neither did they win their group.
Currently, England is the leader for Group A and Austria are the group leaders for Group D, with France coming in at number two.
Romania were put in an even Group E alongside countries like Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine, but they were not the chosen favourites to win, no thanks to Belgium’s influence. Most experts predicted that they would be eliminated in the group stage, but they defied all odds and are now in the round of 16.
In the end, Group got more even, with the four teams placed in it finishing on four points. Romania won their opening match against Ukraine with a 3-0 scoreline, but lost 2-0 to Belgium. Then they snuck up from behind to win a point against Slovakia in their last game. This victory put Romania on top of the group in goals scored.

The Netherlands were not expected to top Group D and many experts predicted that they would finish second to France. This matchup with Romania in the last 16 is unexpected as they failed to top their group as initially predicted. The team opened their group with a victory over Poland and topped the group after two games following their stalemate with France.
Netherlands reclaimed their destiny briefly, but lost it in a 3-2 loss to Austria in their last group game, dropping from top to third. Luckily, their four points was enough for them score a spot as the best third-placed teams. Now, they will want to redeem themselves with a win against Romania.
MatchPlug Prediction For Romania VS Netherlands
Romania and Netherlands have played a total of 13 matches, with Romania getting only one win so far. Since that win in the Euro 2008 qualifying rounds, the Netherlands have won their previous four matches against Romania, including the 2008 tournament. Watch the Netherlands secure another win over the Romanians.
Austria VS Turkey will happen for the first time in a major tournament final when both nations clash at the Red Bull Arena, for the Euro 2024 round of 16.
Austria was impressive in the group stages, with the team defeating Poland 3-1 and the Netherlands 3-2, and losing to France. The team is brimming with confidence as they prepare for the last 16 stage. Although midfielder Patrick Wimmer will miss out due to a suspension and David Alaba due to injury, Austria still has a chance to win here as Ralph Rangnick is doing a fantastic job with the team’s performance.
The Austrians have played 10 times since they returned to the Euro 2024, with at least 10 of those fixtures featuring under 3.5 goals, so consistency is not this team’s problem. Their opponents on the other hand, have had thrilling matches, yet 10 of their matches have delivered only three successful strikes.

Turkey scored a match with Austria by defeating Czech Republic in their last group match. But it would appear that their results are better than their performances. Inter Milan player Hakan Calhanoglu is banned from the game, including Panathinaikos defender Samet Akaydin. However, Vincenzo Montella still has Galatasaray defender Abdulkerim Bardacki who will return from suspension.
The Turks have faced some difficulties in the top-flight lately, conceding ten goals in their last four fixtures. Their opponents have secured 10 wins in competitions on this level, and have maintained six clean sheets as well.
MatchPlug Prediction For Austria VS Turkey
Austria is the better team on paper and has better form than Turkey. Fans can expect the Austrians to win this match easily.

Switzerland almost stunned Germany to top their group but gave up a stoppage-time equaliser in their last match; although the shape of the draw reduced its effects. The Swiss, like the Germans, will play a team that finished second in their group, with Italy as their opponent in the last-16.
Breel Embolo made his first start at the Euros against Germany after battling injuries over the recent months. Silvan Wildmer is banned so the team will need a new right wing-back. In the absence of a natural alternative, Dan Ndoye, Fabian Rieder, Steven Zuber and Michel Aebischer are all the available options.

It has been a difficult time for Italy since they won the last Euros, they received a prompt boost late in their group decider as Mattia Zaccagni struck in stoppage time to steal a point off Croatia. But the Azzurri have been underwhelmed for some time now to make this knockout tie, which will require extra-time and penalties if it stays level.
Luciano Spalletti brought Matteo Darmian into the back three against Croatia, but the team’s performance was uninspiring. Italy will have to make one more change due to Ricardo Calafiori’s suspension, which should witness Gianluca Mancini enter the XI. Zacagni’s equaliser could earn him a start with the Azzurri sincerely fighting for firepower.
MatchPlug Prediction For Switzerland VS Italy
Italy may expose its struggles with scoring when they face a well-prepared Switzerland, which should be confident against the Italians after scoring a result against Germany. However this game might be a bit of a chess match.
The second match of two Euro 2024 last-16 ties happening on Saturday, will feature a Germany VS Denmark game at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund. The Germans who topped Group A to enter the knockout rounds will face the Danish who finished second in Group C.
Germany banished the demons of their last two World Cup campaigns to secure a spot in the knockout rounds, delivering a combined seven goals against Scotland and Hungary. By simply beating Switzerland on the last matchday, Die Mannschaft became group winners. But, they almost didn’t achieve this thanks to an opener by Swiss’ Dan Ndoye.
In a remarkable turn of events, Switzerland are now on the easier side of the knockout draw, as Germany have been grouped with fellow football giants, Spain, France, Portugal and Belgium as their reward for winning the group and reaching the last 16. Germany will get a quarter-final clash against Georgia if they can defeat the Danish.

Group C had the most draws in the Euro 2024 with Denmark, England, Slovenia, and Serbia contributing the joint lowest-scoring men’s Euros group in history with only seven goals scored against six matches. Upcoming opponents Germany were involved in the only previous seven-goal section in 2016, and despite not winning any games in the group, the Danish’s three draws with their three foes was enough for them to get the silver medal.
Denmark is not delusional about the changes they’ll need to make if they are to stand a chance against Germany, but they share the hosts’ seven-match undefeated run in 2024 and have only defeat from their last 15 appearances. But the Germans beat the Danish in their last competitive meeting at the 2012 European Championships.
MatchPlug Prediction For Germany VS Denmark
Denmark is used to keeping matches close at Euro 2024, but even a rearranged Germany backline should find it easy to repel the Scandinavians’ vain attacks, and experts can see the hosts reaching the last eight.
England will once again be saddled by expectations and pressure when they take the next step in their Euro 2024 title race against Slovakia in the last 16. Don’t miss England VS Slovakia.
Despite having a hard time in the tournament, England will be expected to secure a place in the quarter-finals against Italy or Switzerland when they go back to Gelsenkirchen on Sunday evening. This was where they got their only Euros win so far, a close one-goal defeat of Serbia, with two stalemates against Denmark and Slovenia, that opened Gareth Southgate up to criticisms.
But as the winners of Group C, England have gotten the better side of their draw with Germany, France, Spain and Portugal left to fight it out somewhere else, so any glimmer of true improvement on their part, will raise the hopes of fans.

Slovakia qualified as the third position team out of Group E, stunning Belgium to win their opening match before a loss to Ukraine and draw with group winners Romania. They made one change to their lineup for the Romania game as David Strelec replaced Robert Bozenik up front.
Francesco Calzona has named the same starting XI for each match and boasts an excellent experienced spin. Paris Saint-Germain’s Milan Skriniar leads the defence behind a midfield trio of 37-year-old Juraj Kucka, Napoli’s Stanislav Lobotka and Ondrej Duda, who suffered a cramp on Wednesday.
MatchPlug Prediction For England VS Slovakia
The skill of the England team, and lack of attacking prowess in the Slovakia team, means this game will have two possible outcomes. England could secure an early lead, announcing themselves at the tournament with a big victory. Or the Three Lions will dominate the ball but find it hard to break down their opponents with few chances and single goal to win the match.
Needing only a draw to finish first-place in the Euro 2024, Group A winners Spain will visit Cologne on Sunday to face Georgia in their last preliminary game on Sunday. Watch Spain VS Georgia.
Spain were the only team to win all three matches in the group stage, they won and even had the opportunity to rest their starters in the last group stage match. La Roja have been sensational in attack and Nico Willimas, Lamine Yamal and Pedri have blossomed under Alvaro Morata. Fabian Ruiz have been spectacular in midfield, while Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres look sharp off the bench. Spain have become the favourites to win it all.
La Roja had the chances to rest their key players in their victory against Albania, so they will probably use the same lineup that defeated Croatia and Italy. But, Dani Olmo could join the starting lineup.

Georgia has a huge challenge, but the Euros debutante are having a remarkable tournament in Germany and their monumental 2-0 victory against Portugal in their group stage finale to reach the last 16 will be retold for years to come. Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has the capacity to unlock any defence and Georges Mikautadze is the top scorer at Euro 2024 with three goals (two penalty kicks) as Georgia have become everyone’s favourite second team.
Georgia has proven that they can defeat a football giant like Portugal and they will stick to the same plan today, which involves Kvaratskhelia heavily. Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has been astounding so far at this competition and will have to face Spain (where plays for Valencia) on Sunday.
MatchPlug Prediction For Spain VS Georgia
Spain have many attacking players in top shape and it’s hard to see them losing to Georgia. Fans can expect Spain to obliterate Georgia in the first half, but they will secure at least one goal.
France suffered a major setback in Qatar 18 months ago as they surrendered their world crown. Les Blues wanted an instant do-over in a major tournament stage this summer. However, while Didier Deschamps’ men might have opened up their European Championship quest written in as top title contender, they are yet to make any real impact in this competition.
Conceding what could have been a golden opportunity last week as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Poland, there has been a lot of mounting pressure on Deschamps’ shoulders. France has struggled to find any real stability since opening 2024. They have only managed one victory from all of their Group D games.

Belgium might have eventually entered the knockout stage, but they have been under a lot of criticism this summer. With this being their golden generation’s last chance to get his hands on their first international silverware, the former RB Leipzig boss watched his squad get just one victory from any of their three Group E appearances.
Delivering another appalling performance last time out as they concluded their Group E campaign with a 0-0 draw against Ukraine, Belgium seems to have a real task on their hands in this match. Faced with an action-filled 3-2 loss when they last met France in the Nations League tournament in October 2021. Since then, they have failed to get a single victory from any of their six clashes against the former world champions.
MatchPlug Prediction For France VS Belgium
While France may have failed to make any strong Euro 2024 statement this year, they are still considered as a standout title favourite. Les Blues hope to redeem themselves with a Belgium squad that has shown some very obvious weaknesses over the last two weeks, they will be excited by the idea of a victory against the Red Devils. France are undefeated in all of their six previous meetings against Belgium.
Portugal will want to recover from their shocking 2-0 defeat to Georgia when they face Slovenia in the Euro 2024 last 16. Don’t miss Portugal VS Slovenia.
Portugal failed to impress in their last group match, but it should be noted that manager Roberto Martinez mixed up the squad. Rafeal Leao returns from suspension, while other players like Vitinha, Bernado Silva, Ruben Dias, Pepe, Joao Cancelo, and Bruno Fernandes should be recalled to the starting XI.
Due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s influence and Fernandes being in the Portuguese’s ranks, experts predicted this team to be infallible and have what it takes to win this year’s Euros tournament. However, that shocking 2-0 defeat to Georgia has left fans wondering if Portugal is truly champion material. Also, underdogs Georgia have become one of the favourite teams on everybody’s lips.

Slovenia did a fantastic job of holding favourites England to a 0-0 stalemate to advance to the last 16, but they will have bigger problems to solve against CR7 and the rest of Portugal’s squad. While Slovenia beat Portugal 2-0 in the qualifying rounds earlier this year, there is a chance they’ll meet a different side to their opponents in this match.
Slovenia defied all odds to secure a spot to the round of 16, and it is left to see if they have what it takes to reach the finals, or if they’ll fall by the wayside by losing to Portugal. This matchup will be a pivotal one for the Slovenians, and they can only hope to recreate what they did to Portugal in the warm-up round of the Euros.
MatchPlug Prediction For Portugal VS Slovenia
Experts are tempted to put their money on Portugal as they believe Roberto Martinez is going to bring out only his most elite players for this matchup, in a bid to subdue Slovenia once and for all. Martinez will not want what happened with Georgia to repeat.
Final Prediction: Portugal Moneyline.
