Bayer Munich haven’t been at their usual best this season and they risk losing their German League crown to Borussia Dortmund this season. However, they seem to have gotten their swagger back and the end of the first half of the season. Prior to the winter break, they were on a run of 5 straight league wins, scoring 13 goals and conceding just once. They went on a warm weather training camp in Dubai and their fans would hope that they return fresh enough to give Dortmund a run for the league title. Hoffenheim have become the kings of draws this season and Julian Nagelsmann looks to end his reign on a high before taking over at RB Leipzig next season. They have drawn all of their last 6 league games, with 4 of those games ending in 1-1 draws. They have beaten Bayern Munich to nil the last two times the Bavarians visited them, but they don’t seem to carry that same threat this season.
With all the problems they have this season, most of us expected Leganes to come away from the Bernabeu with something when these teams met in the first leg of this game last weekend. However, Leganes may have underrated Madrid and they were well beaten 3-0 by the European champions. Ahead of this game, Leganes would feel that the first leg scoreline has left them with nothing to fight for. They were very poor in the first leg as they offered little going forward and also were a shambles defensively, if they perform that poorly in this game as well, they would probably suffer the same fate. They had just 3 shots on target in that game and came out of it having conceded 3 goals. You can say that all the confidence they had before that game was lost during the game itself. Leganes are not a team that gives up easily and when they have played at home, they have been at their best as they have lost just once in their home in the league this season. Real Madrid have won each of their last four matches against Leganes. When the pair met in the first leg just a week ago, Madrid won by three goals to nil. Since they first met back in 2013, the pair have faced each other ten times. Leganes have won once.
AS Monaco earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Olypique Marseille in their last game and that would have provided a much needed boost to their morale ahead of this game. Thierry Henry’s side needed that draw to show that they are achieving something and they have now avoided defeat in 3 of their last 4 games, whereas they had lost 4 of their previous 5. They have steadied the ship defensively and the return of Rony Lopes to their starting line up alongside the newly signed Cesc Fabregas is surely going to make them a better team in this second half of the season. Nice come into this game having tasted victory just once in their last 7 games in all competitions. However, that win came against Bordeaux last weekend and they would be confident of getting something from this game. The visitors attempted to play a possession-based game in their last match and that wasn’t successful as their opponents kept on cutting out their passes. They could be afforded more freedom to play their game here, but that wouldn’t guarantee them the win. Monaco have scored in four of their last five matches and with Nice losing their last two games on the road, we can see les Monegasques nicking a win here. Both these sides have seen low-scoring matches recently with just two of Nice’s last 14 containing over 2. 5 goals, so we’re going to back a 1-0 victory for Monaco. Nice have seemed incapable of scoring recently and with Monaco on the up, we’re expecting Henry’s men to do the job here. Â
Milan would be looking to stop Juventus from getting their hands on their first of four possible trophies when they face each other in this Super Cup game. The Italian public is far from pleased that this game is not been played on home soil and the fact that it was shifted to January has also not placed the Italian FA in good light. However, these teams would care less and Cristiano Ronaldo would be looking to inspire Juve to win his first major trophy in Italian football. These teams both got their 2019 off to winning starts so they would both be confident of getting something out of this game. Milan were beaten 4-0 by Juventus in the Italian Cup final last season, but we don’t think this game would be as one sided as that one was. Juve have dominated the matches when these two teams meet recently as the Old Ladies come into this game on a run of 6 straight wins over Milan. Juventus have won both encounters with Milan this season, including a 3-1 win when the pair met in Turin back in March last year.
Barcelona bounced back from their loss in the first leg of this game to beat Eibar 3-0 in their last match and their fans would be hoping that they can continue that run of form and secure yet another win in front of them here. The Catalans always lack both creativity and end product when they play without the likes of Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, so Enersto Valverde has a decision to make in terms of resting his key men or not. Levante can count themselves lucky to have won the first leg with two goals inside the first 20 minutes. They actually deserved their win because they were more economical with the ball, however, they haven’t been as good when they play away from home. Barcelona may not have been the best defensively when they play at home, but they have been scoring at least 2. 5 goals when they play at home. Levante have also not been their best when they play away from home as they concede at least 2.3 goals away from home. Levante have now won two of their last three matches against Barcelona, though they have lost each of their previous 12 matches at Camp Nou.
Huddersfield Town proved worthy of their Terriers nickname last season. By the 21st October 2017, David Wagner’s unfancied team had already amassed more points (12) than they have in the entirety of the 2018/19 season to date (10). By the same point in January last season, the Terriers were already on 24 points which would have the club currently in the lofty heights of 14thin the Premier League table. However, the current reality is a different story with Huddersfield rooted to the bottom of the table with just 10 points. At the start of the season, it appeared a little harsh that the Terriers were favourites for the drop with football betting punters, but the signs have been there for close to a year that Huddersfield are better suited to England’s second tier. In the calendar year of 2018, The Terriers clocked just 21-points in the Premier League. To put that into context, West Bromwich Albion who finished bottom of the Premier League last season amassed 31-points. As we enter the second half of the 2018/19 season, the situation in Yorkshire has become critical with the Terriers already eight points adrift of Cardiff in 18th. However, as fate would have it, next up for Huddersfield is a trip to Wales to take on the Bluebirds and David Wagner knows that it is win or bust for his side. Defeat will surely all but spell the end of the Terriers and their two-season stint in the Premier League will not be prolonged. In order to achieve a stay of execution, the Terriers will have to do what they have failed to do since September 2001 and beat the Welsh outfit in the countries capital. Back then, the pair were plying their trade in Division Two (League One these days), both sides also reached the playoffs that year, but it was Stoke City who earned promotion through that particular lottery. Since then, Huddersfield have only managed to win one of the thirteen matches played since with the Bluebirds winning eight. Not a proud record and the Bluebirds are in confident mood after picking up four points from their last three Premier League outings. The signs are ominous for the Terriers but perhaps relegation is something not to be feared. The club are incredibly well run by the Card Factory Chairman Dean Hoyle so are in safe hands with the inevitable relegation not due to cause financial ruin as it has done to previous clubs. Come this weekend, it could all but be over if defeat is the outcome but no matter what happens from now until the end of the season, it can never be in doubt that Huddersfield Town earned their right to be at the top table of English football again, even if that stay looks to be coming to an end.
