Foden Admits Mental Struggles After Difficult Man City Season

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has opened up about a tough season on and off the pitch, admitting his mental state has been a key issue. Foden, last season’s Premier League Player of the Year, has seen his influence fade this campaign. Despite City’s recent domestic dominance, they will end the season without a major trophy for the first time since 2016/17. The 24-year-old was left on the bench during City’s shock FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace. Speaking after the game, Foden said:“Obviously it’s been a frustrating season for me. I’ve had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally.“Sometimes there’s things in life that’s bigger than football and this season I’ve struggled a little bit, but hopefully next year I can get my head mentally right and get back where I left the season before.” Foden previously admitted his “body and mental state was low” earlier in the year. Pep Guardiola has publicly backed the midfielder, especially after he was targeted with abuse during a recent derby clash at Manchester United.

Sorloth Hat-Trick Seals Big Atletico Madrid Win

Alexander Sorloth came off the bench to score a hat-trick as Atletico Madrid beat Girona 4-0 in their final La Liga game of the season. Despite both teams already locked into their respective league positions, the match was far from a dead rubber. Atletico dominated the first half but couldn’t find the net, with  Julian Alvarez twice denied by Girona goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapyvtsov. Diego Simeone was booked for dissent just before the break, frustrated by what he felt was a foul on Rodrigo De Paul. In the second half, Atletico kept pushing. Griezmann hit the bar and Samuel Lino was denied by Daley Blind before Simeone turned to his bench, bringing on Sorloth and his son Giuliano. Sorloth needed just six minutes to score, finishing a move involving Alvarez and De Paul for his 18th league goal of the campaign. Clement Lenglet added a second after Vladyslav Krapyvtsov. spilled a cross, and Sorloth struck twice more to complete his hat-trick and seal a dominant win. Atletico now look ahead to the FIFA Club World Cup, while Girona could drop to fourth if Sevilla avoid defeat against Villarreal.

Betis’ Antony Ready for Man Utd in Conference League Final

Real Betis winger Antony is reportedly fired up to face parent club Manchester United in the UEFA Europa Conference League final. He viewed it as a chance to send a message after a difficult spell at Old Trafford. The Brazilian, on loan at Betis, is expected to start in the final. United boss Ruben Amorim, previously described the campaign as a “disaster” and has reportedly greenlit a major squad overhaul this summer, with Antony among the names on the chopping block. The final offers a high-stakes platform to stake his claim. While Amorim prepares to reshape his squad, Antony appears ready to remind the club of his potential.

Three Issues Xabi Alonso Faces

Xabi Alonso returns to Real Madrid as the club’s new manager following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure. With Los Blancos finishing the season trophyless and preparing for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, the former midfielder has three key challenges ahead: 1. Restoring Tactical Balance Alonso inherits a squad that struggled with structure and consistency. Ancelotti publicly complained of an unbalanced team, overloaded in attack but exposed at the back, especially following injuries and the unaddressed retirement of Toni Kroos. Alonso must: 2. Managing Star Egos Real Madrid’s dressing room is filled with high-profile names and even higher expectations. Ancelotti thrived at managing personalities like Ronaldo, Bale, and Vinicius, maintaining harmony while producing results. Alonso must: 3. Reversing the Clasico Trend Barcelona humiliated Madrid in all four Clásicos this season, including: Hansi Flick’s Barça used high pressing and tactical fluidity to expose Madrid’s flaws. Alonso must quickly develop a plan to make Madrid competitive again in these marquee matchups. Xabi Alonso appointment has generated excitement, but these three issues will define his early months in charge.

Liverpool Make £109 Million Bid Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated midfielder Florian Wirtz. They have put up a second, improved bid worth £109 million, according to reports on Friday. The Premier League champions’ new offer reportedly includes add-on clauses that could make Wirtz the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.  Despite interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals Manchester City, Wirtz is believed to have communicated to Leverkusen his strong desire to join Liverpool ahead of next season. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed earlier this week that Liverpool had “concrete interest” in the 22-year-old midfielder.  However, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro previously insisted Wirtz would not be allowed to leave for less than £125 million. Florian Wirtz emerged as one of Europe’s most promising young playmakers after playing a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title win in the 2023-24 season.  He was also named Bundesliga Player of the Season for his performances. This campaign, Wirtz featured in 31 Bundesliga games, scoring 10 goals as Leverkusen finished runners-up to Bayern Munich.  Since his debut at 17 after moving from Cologne in 2020, Wirtz has scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen.
