Austin FC‘s big offseason signing had a slow start to his debut season, going scoreless through the first four MLS matches. But just 10 minutes into Matchday 5 against expansion side San Diego FC, Brandon Vazquez broke through with a breakaway finish past goalkeeper CJ dos Santos.
Vazquez joined Austin as a Designated Player from LIGA MX’s CF Monterrey for a reported club-record $10 million. The former Atlanta United and FC Cincinnati striker had 36 goals and 19 assists in 149 MLS games before Sunday’s opener.
