Kyler Murray’s time in Arizona is over, and Minnesota appears to be his most likely next destination.
The Vikings have emerged as the favorite to sign the soon-to-be free agent quarterback, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Murray will officially hit the open market on Wednesday when the new league year begins, marking the first time in his career he has been a free agent since being drafted first overall in 2019.
Murray is owed $36.8 million in guarantees from Arizona, so he is expected to sign a one-year minimum deal with his next team, similar to what Russell Wilson did when he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 after being released by Denver.
“He’s never been a free agent before,” Pelissero said. “For Kyler, who’s going to be a free agent in 2027 after taking a one-year minimum deal this year, it makes sense to take his time and explore his options before deciding to take the next important step in his career.”
Minnesota is looking for competition for 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy at quarterback, and Murray fits that profile well. The Vikings have also been linked to Geno Smith and a potential trade for Anthony Richardson. Should Murray land in Minnesota, he would have Justin Jefferson as his top receiver and work under coach Kevin O’Connell, who has gotten strong play out of several quarterbacks during his tenure.
Murray is coming off a season-ending foot injury and appeared to lose his starting job to veteran Jacoby Brissett down the stretch. Despite those concerns, the Vikings’ setup looks like one of the better situations available to him as he looks to revive his career.
