Federico Valverde struck in the 94th minute to hand Real Madrid a dramatic 2-1 victory at Celta Vigo, ending a two-match losing run in La Liga and closing the gap on leaders Barcelona to just one point.
Celta arrived into the game in fine form, having won four consecutive matches across all competitions, and they showed their intent early. Borja Iglesias tested Thibaut Courtois with a low drive from 20 yards in the fifth minute, but the Belgian keeper got down well to save.
Madrid began to find their footing when Vinicius Junior broke in behind and clipped the post.
Shortly after, an Aurelien Tchouameni shot was deflected out for a corner, which Madrid worked cleverly to the Frenchman, who swept in his first league goal of the season in the 11th minute.
Real had won all 18 previous league games this season in which they opened the scoring, a record Iglesias was determined to end. He latched onto a through ball but was again denied by Courtois, though he would not be kept out for long. On 25 minutes, Williot Swedberg shrugged off Trent Alexander-Arnold on the left flank and squared for Iglesias to turn home the equaliser.
The goal appeared to calm things down before the break, until Swedberg tested Courtois again with a powerful side-footed effort right on the stroke of half-time.
