Sunderland took a major step in their push for Premier League promotion with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, led by Eliezer Mayenda’s brace.

However, the victory came with controversy, as Mayenda’s opener in the 34th minute sparked protests from Wednesday. The hosts argued that Leo Hjelde’s long ball hit his arm before he shot it into the net. However, the referee stuck with the decision to count it as a goal.
The win moves Sunderland five points behind second-placed Sheffield United in the league standings.
