Stuttgart produced an emphatic performance to beat Augsburg 5-2 at the WWK Arena, extending their unbeaten Bundesliga run to six matches and ending the hosts’ eight-game unbeaten home streak in the process.
Augsburg were warned early but failed to heed it. Deniz Undav forced a save from Finn Dahmen inside three minutes, and the Stuttgart striker made no mistake shortly before the quarter-hour mark when he tucked away Angelo Stiller’s cross after Dahmen could only bat the ball straight to him. It was his 17th league goal of the season.
Stuttgart doubled their lead just before the half-hour when a poor clearance fell to Chema Andres, whose header set up Nikolas Nartey to flick the ball into the path of Tiago Tomas, who swept home. With their very next attack, Nartey got in front of his marker to turn home Maximilian Mittelstadt’s low cross and make it 3-0.
Augsburg improved after the interval following a triple substitution at half-time, and pulled one back when Alexis Claude-Maurice’s effort was blocked twice before Fabian Rieder powered in the rebound. The comeback lasted only seconds, however, as Stuttgart scored almost directly from kick-off. Chris Fuhrich cut inside and drew a save from Dahmen, but Undav reacted quickest to complete his brace.
Augsburg showed some spirit in the closing stages and pulled another goal back through Anton Kade, but Stuttgart put the result beyond doubt with seven minutes remaining when Undav drew the keeper and rolled the ball across for Ermedin Demirovic to tap in a fifth.
The victory was Stuttgart’s first away win in four attempts and a welcome bounce-back after their midweek Europa League exit. For Augsburg, it was a third straight defeat and a tenth loss in their last 11 meetings with Stuttgart.
