Spurs travel to Anfield on Sunday in what is fast becoming a fight for Premier League survival, as their season continues to spiral in alarming fashion.
It is set to be a busy weekend of top-flight action, with Arsenal looking to take another step towards their first league title in 22 years against Everton, and Manchester United taking on Aston Villa in a vital battle for Champions League qualification.
But it is spurs plight that dominates the headlines. Igor Tudor’s side sit 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, and have lost their last six matches across all competitions, a run that is unprecedented in the club’s history.
Their week went from bad to worse on Wednesday when they were thrashed 5-2 by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 first leg, a disastrous night that saw goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky hauled off after just 17 minutes following two costly errors.
With nine games remaining and no league win in their last 11, Spurs are staring down the barrel of a first relegation since the 1977/78 season. The club has already told supporters they will be given extra time to decide on season ticket renewals given the gravity of the situation.
A trip to Anfield, where they have not won since 2011, is hardly the fixture they needed right now, particularly if West Ham pick up a result against Manchester City on Saturday.
Defender Kevin Danso acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the squad. “Everybody has given everything they have got. It is down to us to dig a little deeper and give it just that bit more. Sometimes there are difficult moments and this is the time to show character,” he said.
