When Toronto FC joined MLS in 2007, success was hard to come by. The club failed to make the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in each of its first eight seasons. That all changed in 2015, when Sebastian Giovinco arrived from Juventus and transformed both the team and the city’s relationship with soccer.
The “Atomic Ant” shocked many by joining TFC not in the summer, as initially expected, but in time for the start of the 2015 campaign. He wanted to dive in right away, and his work ethic matched his intent. Teammates immediately noticed how much each loss affected him.
It took a few weeks for his brilliance to shine through. Giovinco didn’t score until his fourth match, and Toronto managed just three points from their opening five games. But then came a breakout performance against FC Dallas, and the floodgates opened.
