Jaxon Smith-Njigba is staying in Seattle for the long haul.
The Seahawks have agreed to a four-year, $168.6 million contract extension with the star wide receiver, with $120 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The deal averages $42.15 million per year in new money, surpassing Ja’Marr Chase’s $40.25 million annual average to become the richest contract ever for a pass catcher.
Smith-Njigba is coming off the best season of his young career. He led the NFL with 1,793 receiving yards on 119 catches with 10 touchdowns, averaging a career-high 15.1 yards per reception. He also led the league with 14.5 scrimmage yards per touch. The 24-year-old was named a first-team All-Pro and made his second straight Pro Bowl while helping lead Seattle to a Super Bowl title.
The Seahawks had already picked up his fifth-year option before locking him down long-term with this extension.
Smith-Njigba is considered one of the most complete receivers in the game. He can line up outside, in the slot or out of the backfield, making him nearly impossible to match up against consistently. His route running, hands and football instincts have made him a go-to target for quarterback Sam Darnold.
The next priority for Seattle is securing cornerback Devon Witherspoon on a long-term deal.
Smith-Njigba’s new contract could also have implications for the division. Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua is entering the final year of his deal and is due for an extension this offseason, with the new market-setting number now set even higher.
