Real Madrid forward Rodrygo faces a race against time to be fit for the World Cup with Brazil, and could potentially miss the remainder of 2026, after the club confirmed he has suffered a ruptured ACL and lateral meniscus in his right knee.
The Brazilian picked up the injury during Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Getafe, going down near the touchline after a challenge from an opponent. Despite showing visible discomfort, he battled on for another 30 minutes before the full extent of the damage became clear.
The injury is a major setback for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who are already dealing with a growing injury list. Kylian Mbappe is sidelined with a knee sprain, and Franco Mastantuono is suspended following a red card against Getafe. That leaves Vinicius Jr and Gonzalo Garcia as the only fully fit forwards available, with Brahim Diaz also in the squad but apparently outside the coach’s plans.
Madrid currently sit four points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona and have a Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City approaching fast.
On the international front, Brazil have two friendlies coming up against France and Croatia as part of their World Cup preparations, and Rodrygo’s absence will be a significant blow to their attacking options.
