Reed Blankenship is bringing Super Bowl experience to Houston and believes the Texans have everything they need to go all the way.
The safety signed a three-year, $24.75 million deal with the Texans after contributing to Philadelphia’s Super Bowl LIX championship run.
At his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Blankenship made clear he expects the defense to keep performing at a high level.
“There should not be any fall off,” Blankenship said. “If anything, there should be a sense of calmness. There’s going to be another communicator in the back end. I feel like the sky’s the limit for this secondary.”
Blankenship went undrafted out of Middle Tennessee in 2022 and worked his way into a full-time starting role with the Eagles by his second season. He posted a career-high 11 passes defended and three interceptions in 2023 and has been a reliable starter in Philadelphia’s defense ever since.
He said the presence of pass rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter gives him plenty of reason to be excited about what the defense can do.
“They got some fire rushers in that pair,” Blankenship said. “It’s going to make my life a lot easier, certainly.”
Houston retained several key defenders this offseason, re-signing Naquan Jones, Sheldon Rankins, E.J. Speed and M.J. Stewart among others. Blankenship joins a unit that was already one of the better defenses in the league last season.
“I’m super excited to get to work with these guys and really start to build relationships with them,” he said. “We have a winning mindset. I can already feel that in the building.”
