Nuno concedes West Ham will struggle to replace ‘unique’ Paqueta

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted the club will find it difficult to replace Lucas Paqueta as the Brazilian midfielder closes in on a move away from east London.

The Hammers confirmed this week that Paqueta has been granted permission to travel to Brazil to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed £36.5 million transfer to Flamengo.

Paqueta, 28, joined West Ham from Lyon in 2022 and has been a key figure in the club’s midfield since his arrival. He remains under contract until the summer of 2027, with the club also holding an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.

Speaking ahead of the move, Nuno acknowledged the challenge West Ham face in replacing the Brazilian’s influence.

“Lucas is a unique player,” Nuno said. “His quality, creativity and understanding of the game are not easy to find. Of course, we always prepare for different scenarios, but replacing someone like him is never straightforward.”

The departure would mark the end of a significant chapter for West Ham, with the club now expected to assess reinforcements as they plan for life without one of their most technically gifted players.
