AC Serie A title challenge suffered a significant setback as Lazio claimed a 1-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico, inflicting the Rossoneri’s first away league defeat of the season and leaving them eight points adrift of leaders Inter Milan.
The result was particularly damaging given that Inter had been held to a draw by Atalanta the previous day, presenting Milan with a golden opportunity to close the gap at the top. Instead, a mid-table Lazio side made the brighter start and created the game’s early chances. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Nuno Tavares both tested Mike Maignan, and Kenneth Taylor rattled the crossbar with an angled strike.
Those were warning signs that went unheeded, as Lazio broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Gustav Isaksen latched onto Adam Marusic’s long pass, outmuscled his defender and fired a composed left-footed finish into the far corner.
Milan struggled to find their rhythm throughout and were largely frustrated by an organised Lazio backline. Christian Pulisic had the best of the visitors’ chances after the break but saw one effort parried and scuffed another. Substitute Christopher Nkunku offered some threat down the left in the closing stages, and Luca Modric blazed over with Milan pushing for an equaliser. Zachary Athekame thought he had levelled with a neat finish from a corner, but the goal was ruled out after he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the build-up.
Despite the result, Lazio had manager Maurizio Sarri sent off in stoppage time. The victory gave the Biancocelesti back-to-back league wins for the first time since February 2025 and moved them up one place to ninth in the table.
