Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez now faces a felony battery charge, causing serious bodily injury, prosecutors announced Monday.

The new charge, which carries a possible one- to six-year prison sentence, adds to the misdemeanor counts Sanchez was already facing from a late-night altercation in downtown Indianapolis over the weekend.

According to a police affidavit, Sanchez, reportedly smelling of alcohol, confronted a 69-year-old truck driver near a hotel loading dock. The confrontation turned violent when the driver allegedly used a knife in self-defense, stabbing Sanchez multiple times in the upper torso.

Both men were hospitalized; Sanchez remains in stable condition.

“Once we received new information about the victim’s medical condition, it became clear that additional charges were needed,” Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears said.

Sanchez’s attorney declined to comment. A scheduled court appearance was moved to Nov.
