Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca lamented his team’s defending after they lost 2–1 at Atalanta in the Champions League.
Joao Pedro put Chelsea ahead after 25 minutes, but Atalanta came out stronger in the second half. Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere scored to turn the match around.
Maresca said Chelsea should have extended their lead and criticised the goals they conceded.
“After we conceded the 1–1, we lost control,” he said. “Both goals were avoidable. They’re easy goals.”
The win moved Atalanta to 13 points and close to direct qualification for the last 16. Chelsea have 10 and likely need to beat both Pafos and Napoli to finish in the top eight and avoid a playoff.
Maresca said the focus is on winning their remaining group games. Chelsea return to league action on Saturday against Everton.
