Liverpool’s James McConnell signs new deal ahead of Ajax loan move

Liverpool midfielder James McConnell has signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League champions and is set to join Ajax on loan.

James McConnell, who arrived from Sunderland in 2019, made his senior debut under Jurgen Klopp. He has since featured 13 times while also captaining the club’s U21s.

McConnell’s previous deal was due to expire next summer. However, he has committed his future to Liverpool until 2029. The Reds view him as a potential first-team regular in the coming years.

Ajax, led by former Liverpool assistant Johnny Heitinga, won the race to secure his signature despite interest from West Brom, Hull, Oxford United, Sturm Graz and several other clubs.

The club have been seeking a new midfielder since the departure of former captain Jordan Henderson. Henderson, who left on a free transfer in June before returning to the Premier League with Brentford.
