Liverpool players and staff gathered in the Portuguese town of Gondomar on Saturday to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota. Joys tragically died alongside his younger brother, André Silva, in a car crash on Thursday.
Club captain Virgil Van Dijk, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, and manager Arne Slot were among those who flew in from England to pay their final respects. The funeral took place at the Igreja Matriz church, with hundreds of locals and Jota’s family, including his wife Rute Cardoso and their three children, in attendance.
Jota, 28, had only recently married Cardoso and was a beloved figure both in Gondomar and across the football world.
The crash occurred when their Lamborghini veered off the road and caught fire. Authorities suspect a tyre blowout caused the accident.
The football community has continued to send tributes, with fans, players, and political figures mourning the loss of a talented forward and family man.
