Harry Kane has paid tribute to Vincent Kompany’s influence on Bayern Munich’s development this season as the German giants close in on a potentially historic treble.
Bayern head into Saturday’s home game against Union Berlin nine points clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga, with a German Cup semi-final against Leverkusen and a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid also on the horizon in April. No European men’s club has ever won three trebles, and Bayern are firmly in the hunt to make history.
Kane was quick to credit Kompany’s growing impact after Bayern thrashed Atalanta for the second time this season on Wednesday. “In the way we play, we have learned and evolved over the last 12 months,” the England captain said. “A lot of people forgot it was Kompany’s first year last year. We were still learning the way he wanted to play, still learning different ideas from him. I think we have really honed in on his ideas now, and we are a better team this year than we were last year.”
Kane also acknowledged that the real test of their season lies ahead. “Now it is about proving it on the big stage. We have had a fantastic campaign in all competitions so far, but April and May is when it really counts. We have to be at our highest level in those moments.”
The records are also within reach. Bayern have scored 93 goals in 26 league games, just eight short of the all-time single Bundesliga season record of 101 set in 1971/72. Kane himself has 30 league goals and needs 12 more to surpass Robert Lewandowski’s single-season record from 2020/21. Winger Michael Olise is also closing in on history, with 17 assists in the campaign, five short of Thomas Mueller’s all-time record.
Bayern will be without several key players against Union Berlin, with Musiala, Neuer and Davies all injured, while Nicolas Jackson, Jonathan Tah and Luis Diaz are suspended.
