NFL Hall of Famer John Elway will not be charged following the tragic death of his longtime business partner and former agent Jeffrey Sperbeck, who fell from a golf cart Elway was driving in April, authorities confirmed.
According to Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, the incident has been ruled a tragic accident, with no evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
Sperbeck, 62, suffered blunt force trauma after tumbling out of the moving cart on April 26 at The Madison Club golf resort in La Quinta, California. A coroner’s report confirmed the cause and manner of death as accidental.
“I’ve looked at video 100 times and there’s no explanation as to why he fell off, he just fell off,” Bianco told KUSA-TV in Denver.
Elway has not publicly commented on the new findings, but in a statement shortly after Sperbeck’s passing, the former Denver Broncos quarterback expressed his heartbreak:
“There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
Sperbeck had represented Elway during his playing career and later became his business partner.
