Reece James has signed a new six-year deal at Chelsea, tying the club captain to Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2032.
The 26-year-old’s previous contract was due to run until 2028, but the club moved to extend his stay and put an end to any speculation ahead of the summer transfer window. James has been at Chelsea since the age of six and has gone on to make 225 appearances for the club since his senior debut in 2019, before being handed the captaincy in 2023.
The right back was full of emotion after putting pen to paper, expressing his delight at committing his future to the only club he has ever known.
“I am over the moon to have extended my contract. Chelsea means so much to me. I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes,” James said.
“I am excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.”
Despite dealing with a number of injury setbacks throughout his career, James has remained a key figure under manager Liam Rosenior, helping the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year.
Sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart welcomed the news on behalf of the club. “It is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract. He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch,” they said.
