Seven years on from his breakthrough at Arsenal, Bukayo Saka remains one of the club’s most important players. But at 24, questions are beginning to surface about whether the England winger is carrying too heavy a burden.
Since making his Premier League debut in the 2018/19 season, Saka has grown into one of the division’s standout performers. His record of 69 goals and 48 assists in 245 top-flight appearances, along with a further 21 goals and 18 assists in cup competitions, explains why so many regard him as Arsenal’s talisman.
This season, however, has not gone to plan. Saka has managed just six goals and three assists in the league, his worst return since the 2020/21 campaign when he posted five goals and three assists. Injuries have played a significant role, with the winger already sidelined for two months across three separate spells this term.
The concern for Mikel Arteta goes beyond the numbers. When Saka is fit and firing, Arsenal look a far more balanced and dangerous side. His absence or lack of sharpness has a knock-on effect across the whole team.
What makes the situation more worrying is the bigger picture. Saka has dealt with 30 separate injury or illness setbacks since breaking into the first team, raising genuine concerns about the long-term physical toll the game is taking on him.
With the demands of modern football only increasing, the question of burnout is one Arsenal can no longer afford to ignore.
