Rasmus Højlund says his move to Napoli was inevitable after Manchester United bolstered their attacking options this summer.
The 21-year-old Danish striker has joined the Serie A club on a season-long loan with an option to buy, ending a two-year spell at Old Trafford. Højlund scored 26 goals in 95 appearances for United after arriving from Atalanta in 2023, helping the club lift the Emirates FA Cup last season.
But his form dipped under new manager Ruben Amorim, netting just six times in 33 appearances during the Portuguese coach’s first campaign in charge. United’s summer arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko further limited his opportunities.
“My prospects for playing time diminished as they brought in reinforcements for my position,” Hojlund told TV2 Sport. “With my age and ambitions, I had to find a place where they believe in me, give me a lot of love, and offer a good sporting package. I feel 100 per cent that I have found it with Napoli. It’s something I’m really, really looking forward to.”
The striker now begins a fresh chapter in Italy, where Napoli will look to Højlund to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most coveted young forwards.
