Ja Morant’s season is over.
The Memphis Grizzlies announced Tuesday night that the 26-year-old guard will need a platelet-rich plasma injection for his elbow injury and has been shut down for the remainder of the season. The team expects him to make a full recovery in time for next season.
Morant played in just 20 games this year, averaging 19.5 points per game, his lowest output since his second season in the league. He sprained the elbow in late January, shortly after missing two weeks with calf soreness.
The early exit continues a troubling pattern for Morant, who has appeared in just 79 games over the past three seasons combined.
Morant was taken second overall in the 2019 draft out of Murray State, behind Zion Williamson, and quickly became one of the most electrifying players in the league. His ability to attack the rim against bigger defenders and his creative passing made him a nightly highlight. He won Rookie of the Year in 2020 and Most Improved Player in 2022.
