After failing to build on their romantic success story at the World Cup, Iceland faces France in this friendly game, and the question on everyone’s lips at the moment is whether they can survive the onslaught of the World champions and restore some pride in this game.
France began their reign as World Champions with two games against Germany and Netherlands, and they collected 4 points from those matches to put themselves firmly on the driving seat in their Euro Nations League group.
They would be playing Germany next week, so we expect to see a few changes in this game, but this French team is incredibly talented and we don’t think Iceland can get a draw from their third string side.
Iceland also got their Nations League campaign underway last month, and they were handed two heavy defeats. They have failed to turn around their form after the World Cup, with their poor run dragging on for 12 months now. They were able to qualify for Russia in style, but the build-up to the World Cup brought losses to the likes of Norway, Peru and the Czech Republic. Nothing seemed to lift their poor form ahead of the big tournament, and now the surprise side of Euro 2016 is under a cloud as they return to France.
France have won six and drawn one of their last seven meetings with Iceland, and they have never lost to them.
