Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confirmed that Szczesny will start in goal for both Tuesday’s crucial UEFA Champions League fixture. As well as the upcoming El Clasico showdown with Real Madrid, regardless of Marc-André ter Stegen’s strong return performance over the weekend.
Ter Stegen impressed in his comeback appearance during Barcelona’s 2-1 win over relegated Real Valladolid. Second-half goals from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez secured all three points for the league leaders.
Despite the German keeper’s solid display, Flick revealed his plans to stick with Szczesny for the club’s two high-stakes encounters.
“We’ll see about Marc, he did well today, but Szczesny will play in the Champions League and against Real Madrid,” Flick said in his post-match press conference.
Flick rotated heavily against Valladolid, making nine changes to his starting eleven to manage the squad ahead of a demanding stretch. He emphasized that the youthful lineup’s performance, though inconsistent, didn’t concern him.
“I’m not disappointed,” he added. “I’m not disappointed. When you make that many changes, it’s not easy for the players, they’re young. I believe in them. I have confidence. When there is a lot of rotation, the level is different”
Barcelona remain top of La Liga as they prepare for a defining week in both domestic and European competitions.
