Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has admitted that winning the Europa League won’t be enough to make up for a disappointing season.
United face Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday night.
Asked if lifting the trophy would turn things around, Fernandes said: “I wouldn’t say it’s a reward, I think it will just be successful in terms of the Europa League. It’s very important to do that, to get the silverware this season. But it won’t save anything.”
Speaking about their opponents, Fernandes acknowledged the added pressure of playing Bilbao, who would host the final at their San Mamés stadium if they advance.
“They have the final at home if they beat us, so it will be really tough. You have to be prepared,” he said.
