Borussia Dortmund produced a remarkable turnaround to beat Hamburger SV 3-2, coming from two goals down at half-time to maintain their unbeaten Bundesliga record against all sides except Bayern Munich this season.
Hamburg made a bright start and grew in confidence after surviving an early scare when Daniel Heuer Fernandes denied Maximilian Beier in a one-on-one. Philip Otele opened the scoring when William Mikelbrencis robbed Daniel Svensson and slid the ball across goal for the Nigerian to tap in. Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira then drove a shot from distance that Gregor Kobel could only parry, and Albert Sambi Lokonga picked up the loose ball to lift a composed finish into the near top corner and double the lead.
Dortmund were handed a lifeline before the break when Warmed Omari brought down Beier in the area, but Felix Nmecha wasted the opportunity, sending his penalty wide of the left post.
The second half told a completely different story. Substitutes Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva injected fresh energy into Dortmund’s play, and the comeback began when referee Matthias Jollenbeck pointed to the spot after Mikelbrencis stood on Beier’s toe. Ramy Bensebaini this time made no mistake, rolling the ball down the middle. Dortmund were level five minutes later when Guirassy bundled home from close range after a scramble in the box.
Silva nearly added a third with a thunderous effort, and Dortmund completed the stunning comeback with six minutes remaining when Miro Muheim handled in the area. Bensebaini stepped up again and converted with a well-placed finish into the bottom right corner.
The win ends Hamburg’s four-match unbeaten away run and keeps Dortmund nine points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern with seven games to play.
