Dortmund consolidate second spot after comeback win against Heidenheim

Borussia Dortmund kept Bayern Munich within sight in the Bundesliga title race after fighting back to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory over Heidenheim.

Dortmund had scored exactly three goals in each of their previous four league matches. They made a sluggish start and struggled to assert themselves during the opening 20 minutes. Their only meaningful early effort came when Serhou Guirassy cut inside and unleashed a powerful strike that was well saved by Diant Ramaj.

Heidenheim briefly thought they had taken a shock lead midway through the first half when Patrick Mainka bundled the ball into the net. The goal was disallowed after the defender was judged to have fouled Gregor Kobel as the goalkeeper attempted to claim the cross.

Kobel was then called into action again in the 26th minute, producing a superb save to deny Eren Dinkci from close range after a rebound fell kindly to the winger. Dortmund responded with increased pressure, as Nico Schlotterbeck squandered a headed opportunity from a corner before Guirassy saw an audacious chip strike the crossbar.

The breakthrough finally arrived for the hosts when Ramaj failed to deal with another corner, spilling the ball at the feet of Waldemar Anton, who made no mistake by smashing home from close range.

However, Dortmund’s advantage was short-lived. On the stroke of half-time, Mathias Honsak surged down the left flank and delivered a teasing cross, which Julian Niehues converted at the second attempt to restore parity.

Dortmund emerged with renewed intent after the interval and completed the comeback with two second-half goals.

The victory maintains pressure on leaders Bayern Munich and underlines Dortmund’s growing momentum as the Bundesliga title race gathers pace.
