Cubs sign Brasier from Dodgers to boost bullpen

The Chicago Cubs bought Ryan Brasier and cash from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To create room on the 40-man squad, the Cubs chose left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny for assignment.

Brasier was chosen for the post last week when Los Angeles signed Kirby Yats, but Brasier has been a productive pitcher when in-form in recent seasons. In June 2023, he joined the Dodgers after leaving the Boston Red Sox and delivered a 0.70 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 38 ⅔ innings with Los Angeles.

However, Brasier didn’t perform as well last campaign, pitching a 3.54 ER across 28 innings. He was also absent for more than three months due to a right calf strain. He recorded a career-low 4.5% walk rate, and his 34.8% chase rate was above the league average (28.5%).

Brasier spots a 3.85 ERA through 285 ⅓ career innings. He has extensive playoff experience from his six years with the Red Sox, where he won two World Series.

Now as he enters his ninth MLB season, he is the latest noteworthy player to join Chicago’s renovated bullpen, which has free-agent Caleb Thielbar and trade signings Eli Morgan and Ryan Pressly.
