Coventry City moved to the brink of ending a 25-year absence from the Premier League after a commanding 3-0 win at Swansea, with promotion rivals stumbling around them on Saturday.
Frank Lampard’s side blitzed three goals in 11 minutes before half-time to secure a seventh win in eight games. Brandon Thomas-Asante opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Matt Grimes netted against his former club. The Sky Blues now sit nine points clear of second-placed Middlesbrough with seven games remaining.
Middlesbrough’s hopes of automatic promotion faded further after a goalless draw at relegation-threatened Blackburn. Boss Kim Hellberg admitted his side need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to win enough of their remaining games.
Third-placed Ipswich also missed the chance to close the gap, held to a 1-1 draw by Millwall. Jack Clarke gave Kieran McKenna’s men the lead before Josh Coburn levelled for the visitors. The point keeps Millwall in the hunt for a top-two finish, with the Lions still looking to reach the Premier League for the first time since 1990. Ipswich remain 11 points behind Coventry, though they could move above Middlesbrough with a win in hand.
In the play-off race, Hull lead fifth and sixth on goal difference over Southampton and Wrexham after beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1. Southampton won 2-0 against Oxford while Wrexham came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1.
At the bottom, Leicester edged closer to safety as Portsmouth were thrashed 6-1 by QPR, though a 0-0 draw at Watford leaves the Foxes just one point above the drop zone. West Brom picked up a timely three points with a 1-0 win at Bristol City, their first away league victory since October.
