Cesc Fabregas’ Como cemented their place in the Serie A top four with a stunning 5-0 home victory over relegation-threatened Pisa, registering only their second run of five consecutive top-flight wins in the club’s history.
Pisa needed to weather an early storm to keep their slim survival hopes alive, but they were undone inside 10 minutes when a careless square pass from Stefano Moreo was intercepted by Assane Diao, who drove at the exposed defence and slotted into the bottom corner on his first start since mid-December.
Diao then turned creator just before the half-hour mark, leading a counter-attack down the right before cutting inside and picking out Anastasios Douvikas, who buried the ball at the near post for his third goal against Pisa this season.
Como were dealt a setback when Jesus Rodriguez picked up an injury before half-time, but his replacement Martin Baturina made an immediate impact. Just three minutes after the restart, the Croatian picked the ball up on the inside right, held off a challenge and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
Pisa had two goals disallowed for offside as they searched for a way back into the match, and those decisions visibly deflated the visitors. Nico Paz then swept home from Alberto Moreno’s cutback in the 75th minute, and Maximo Perrone completed the rout late on by turning Nicolas Kuhn’s square pass into an empty net.
The result pulls Como three points clear of Juventus in fourth place. Pisa remain nine points adrift of safety at the foot of the table and are still searching for their first away win since returning to the top flight last year.
