Como kept their dream of a first European campaign in over four decades alive with a 2-1 victory at Cagliari, a result that extends their impressive away record to seven wins from eight matches across all competitions.
Just three points off a Champions League qualification spot with 11 games to go, Como had plenty of motivation to make a fast start. They took a little longer than expected to click into gear, but broke the deadlock just before the 15-minute mark. Lucas Da Cunha sliced open the Cagliari defence with a sharp pass into the penalty area, giving Martin Baturina the room to fire first time into the bottom-left corner.
Cagliari pushed for a quick response and came close five minutes later when Michel Adopo’s rebound effort looked to be heading in, only for goalkeeper Jean Butez to produce a superb save to keep Como ahead.
The hosts drew level 10 minutes into the second half. Sebastiano Esposito, in fine form since joining on loan from Inter Milan, got down low to head home Adam Obert’s precise delivery, his tenth goal contribution of the season split equally between goals and assists.
Como regained the lead with 14 minutes of normal time remaining. Da Cunha stepped up with a stunning long-range strike that flew into the top corner, giving Caprile no chance whatsoever.
The win takes Como level on points with AS Roma, with only head-to-head record keeping them out of the top four. Cagliari, meanwhile, remain six points above the relegation zone, though that gap could shrink before the weekend is out. Sonnet 4.6
