The Colorado Rapids have added another defender, acquiring Loic Williams from Spanish second-division side Granada CF, the club announced Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Spaniard is under contract through the 2029-30 season with an option for 2030-31. Williams will join Colorado this summer and occupy an international roster spot.
Rapids sporting director Fran Taylor highlighted the qualities that made Williams stand out.
“He’s composed on the ball, competitive, fast, and of course left-footed,” Taylor said. “These are qualities that are rare in the soccer landscape, and we are pleased to secure his signature.”
Williams turned professional with Girona and has gone on to make 113 appearances across spells with Granada, CD Tenerife and CD Atletico Paso, contributing one goal and one assist.
Head coach Matt Wells said Williams was a priority target despite competition from other clubs.
“He’s played in demanding competitions in Spain, has the required composure and technical ability to play our dominant football, but crucially he combines that with a fierce desire to defend,” Wells said. “We’re excited that he is joining us despite strong interest from other clubs in Europe.”
Wells previously served as an assistant coach at Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League. Colorado are in their first season under his direction and are looking to return to the MLS Cup Playoffs after missing out last year.
