LThe Colorado Rapids have added defensive depth, acquiring Kosi Thompson from Toronto FC, the clubs announced Thursday.
Toronto will receive $200,000 in guaranteed General Allocation Money in the deal, with the potential for an additional $200,000 in performance-based GAM. The Canadian club also retains a sell-on percentage.
Thompson, 23, has spent almost his entire professional career with Toronto, making 113 first-team appearances and recording two goals and one assist. He had a brief loan spell with Norwegian side Lillestrom SK in 2023.
Colorado sporting director Fran Taylor said the club believes Thompson fits the way they want to play.
“He’s a young defender with valuable MLS experience who brings solidity and versatility to our group,” Taylor said. “Kosi has shown the ability to impact the game on both sides of the ball.”
Toronto general manager Jason Hernandez said the club understood Thompson’s desire for more consistent playing time.
“As one of our homegrown players, Kosi dedicated many years of his football journey to TFC, and we greatly appreciate his efforts,” Hernandez said. “He will always have a home at TFC.”
Colorado missed the playoffs last season and are looking to return to the postseason in their first year under head coach Matt Wells. Toronto, in their second season under Robin Fraser, also missed out on the 2025 postseason.
