Sancho Returns to Manchester United After Chelsea Loan Ends

Jadon Sancho has officially returned to Manchester United following the end of his loan spell at Chelsea. The club confirmed this on Wednesday. Sancho made 41 appearances for Chelsea, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. Among these is a memorable strike in the Conference League final against Real Betis. Chelsea had an option to buy the winger for €30 million, but the deal reportedly collapsed over salary negotiations with the player. As a result, the Blues paid €6 million in compensation to United instead. Sancho now re-joins United with one year left on his contract. He will not feature for Chelsea at the upcoming Club World Cup. His future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.

Former Netherlands defender Heitinga takes over as Ajax boss

Former Netherlands defender Johnny Heitinga has been appointed as the new coach at Ajax, the Dutch club announced on Saturday. The 41-year-old Heitinga returns to the club where he started his career as a player, replacing Francesco Farioli who resigned last week after Ajax‘s spectacular title collapse. He has signed a two-year contract and will be assisted by Marcel Kaizer, who had a brief spell in charge of Ajax in 2017. Heitinga spent the past season working under Arne Slot at Premier League champions Liverpool. He also had a stint on David Moyes’ coaching staff at West Ham. “I am incredibly excited to start. The last years in England have done me a lot of good,” Heitinga said in a club statement. “I’ve been able to develop further alongside David Moyes and Arne Slot, while also getting a behind-the-scenes look at two major clubs. “I’m ready to continue as a head coach and I’m honoured to be given that opportunity at Ajax.” Ajax suffered a painful end to the season after blowing a nine-point lead with five matches to play, allowing PSV Eindhoven to snatch the league title on the final day. Farioli revived the fortunes of a team coming off a dismal fifth-place finish in the 2023-24 campaign, but he decided to leave due to “different visions” with the club board. Former Atletico Madrid, Everton and Fulham centre-back Heitinga retired in 2016 after a brief second spell with boyhood club Ajax. He played 87 times for the Netherlands but was sent off in extra time in the 1-0 loss to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final.

Liverpool have completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal was made after triggering his €35m (£29.5m) release clause. The Dutch international joins on a five-year deal and is set to battle Conor Bradley for the right-back role. This comes after following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid. “Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer,” Frimpong told the club’s official website. “For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, (speaking to) my agents: ‘Just get this done’.” Frimpong added: “Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.” The 24-year-old starred for Leverkusen during their unbeaten Bundesliga-winning campaign. He contributed 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances. Celtic, his former club, are due a reported £5m from the deal. Liverpool are also pursuing Frimpong’s former teammate Florian Wirtz. After submitting a €130m (£109.4m) offer.

Gasperini quits Atalanta after nine years

Gian Piero Gasperini confirmed on Saturday he will leave Atalanta. This is after nine hugely successful years ahead of an expected move to rivals Roma. Gasperini, 67, departs after turning the Bergamo club from provincial also-rans in the shadow of the Milan giants down the road to one of Italy’s best teams and even Europa League winners last year. “In the last few hours I have decided to put an end to a wonderful nine-year-long story… I’m ending my experience in Bergamo as head coach of Atalanta,”Gasperini said in an open letter written to newspaper L’Eco di Bergamo. “I decided to end my relationship with the club, and no responsibility should be put upon the club or its directors. I’ve simply come to understand that the time has come to take this step.” Atalanta finished third in Serie A this past season and secured Champions League football. They have two matches left to play after falling short with an ambitious bid for the club’s first league title. Gasperini is set to join Roma on a three-year contract with a net salary of five million euros (£4.2m). Roma last qualified for the Champions League in 2017. They missed out in a spot in Europe’s top club competition on the final day of the campaign last weekend. Ranieri came out of retirement in November to save Roma from sliding into relegation. He also guided them to fifth and a place in the Europa League.

What should have been a Champions League jubilation turned tragic in France as celebrations of PSG’s 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan spiraled into chaos. The traumatic night left two people dead, a police officer in a coma, and hundreds under arrest. According to France’s interior ministry, 491 arrests were made in Paris alone, primarily along the Champs-Élysées where large crowds gathered. Clashes erupted between fans and police, with fireworks, car horns, and chanting giving way to violence. Nationwide, 559 people were arrested, and 692 fires were reported, including 264 vehicles set ablaze. The unrest also resulted in 18 injured police officers in Paris, three more across other regions, 192 injured civilians, and seven fire personnel harmed during the response. Among the most serious incidents, a police officer in Normandy was placed in an induced coma. A criminal investigation has been launched into the incident for intentional violence against an officer. Tragically, two people lost their lives amid the chaos: The government has yet to comment on whether additional security measures will be introduced for future public celebrations. However, the scenes mark one of the most violent nights following a sporting event in France in recent memory.

Ten Hag: Ajax ‘Were Never an Option’ After Taking Leverkusen Job

Erik Ten Hag was officially unveiled as Bayer Leverkusen  new manager on Monday.  He quickly dismissed any speculation of a return to Ajax, saying the Dutch giants “were never an option.” “I had very good conversations here,” said Ten Hag, who returns to Germany after coaching Bayern Munich’s reserves from 2013 to 2015. “I already knew a lot about the club and the Bundesliga. I think it’s a nice project to build something with good players.” On choosing Leverkusen, he added: “The Premier League and Bundesliga have similarities and differences, that’s clear. German football and the Bundesliga mean a lot in world football… When people ask what football is, it is, as they say, a game of 11 against 11, and ultimately the Germans win.”

DeBoer fired as Stars coach after 3 seasons

Pete DeBoer was fired as coach of the Dallas Stars on Friday. “Today was a tough day,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “I spoke with Pete this morning at 9 o’clock. Great conversation, he was very professional and he understands. We have a good relationship and that’s probably what makes this the hardest. “I have the utmost respect for him as a person and as a coach. In the end, it’s my responsibility to make a decision that’s the right decision” No replacement was named. DeBoer guided Dallas to a 50-26-6 record this season. He led the Stars to the Western Conference Final for the third straight season. However, the 56-year-old was critical of goalie Jake Oettinger in a Game 7 loss to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final on May 29, pulling the team’s No. 1 goalie after he allowed two goals on two shots 7:09 into the first period. During Dallas’ final availability, Oettinger said being removed from the game was “embarrassing,”. “Any time you get pulled, doesn’t matter if it’s the playoffs or the regular season, you just want to go right off the ice and crawl into your bed and not talk to anyone,” he said. Nill said after exit interviews were completed with the players and an internal assessment of the season was completed. However, Nill did not dismiss the idea a change was being considered prior to the Stars’ playoff exit. In three seasons with Dallas, DeBoer was 149-68-29 and had the best points percentage in the NHL (.665). “I’m sitting up here and I just let (go) a guy who went to the conference finals three years in a row,” Nill said. DeBoer’s teams have made the third round of the playoffs six of the past seven seasons. He has guided two teams (Devils, 2012; Sharks, 2016) to the Stanley Cup Finals. DeBoer ranks fourth among active coaches and 17th all-time in coaching wins. Nill said the process for finding a new coach is just beginning, and that it is “wide-ranging.” The Stars are the only NHL team without a coach; the Boston Bruins filled their coaching vacancy by hiring Marco Sturm on Thursday.

Carbery of Capitals wins Jack Adams Award as top coach

Spencer Carbery was expecting to do a television interview and ended up being surprised with the Jack Adams Award. On Saturday, the Washington Capitals coach was announced as the winner of the award given to the top coach in the NHL as voted on by the National Broadcasters’ Association.  The 43-year-old was recently in studio with Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati of Monumental Sports Network, who was also in on the surprise. “He is under a ruse that he is coming here to do an interview for Monumental Sports. I think he is going to be really, really shocked,” said Carbery’s wife, Casey, who was backstage along with his son, Hudson, and daughter, Vivian. “I’ve been told there are a few special people who want to congratulate you on this outstanding season,” Beninati said before the Jack Adams Award as well as Carbery’s family entered the studio. “I had no idea,” Carbery said, before his parents Bryan and Kate also entered. “How did everyone travel here? All corners of the continent. Washington State, South Carolina, Victoria, British Columbia, Chicago, Illinois, Green Bay, Wisconsin. For them to come to D.C. and celebrate this moment with me, I’ll never forget that.” “In the ultimate team sport as a coach, you hate things that direct attention toward you,” Carbery said. “Our support staff and obviously our players, all those people deserve so much credit for this award.”

Panthers Players are doing their part heading into Game 3

In the aftermath of the Florida Panthers’ win on Friday, most of the talk was about the great offensive plays and players. For Florida, Brad Marchand scored twice on breakaways, including at 8:05 of the second overtime, and Sam Bennett set an NHL record with his 12th road goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For Edmonton, Connor McDavid had three assists, including his dazzling stickhandling and feed to Leon Draisaitl on the power play. Draisaitl had two more points (one goal, one assist), and Corey Perry scored with 18 seconds left in the third period to force overtime. “I don’t think that we talk about the two goalies enough in this series,” Maurice said. “There were some good saves made at both ends. High-end saves.” Maurice’s opinion had not changed after reviewing some of the video Saturday morning. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 42 of 46 shots for the Panthers in Game 2, including 13 in the first overtime. Stuart Skinner stopped 37 of 42 for the Oilers, including 11 over the two overtimes. Through the first two games of the Cup Final, Bobrovsky has stopped 84 of 92 shots. Skinner has stopped 66 of 74 shots for a 2.90 GAA and an .892 save percentage. That’s why when most of Florida’s players jumped off the bench to mob Marchand after he scored his winning goal. defenseman Nate Schmidt headed toward Bobrovsky instead. “Just wanted to hug ‘Bob,’” Schmidt said. “I just wanted to give him a big hug. He was so good for us, and, in the back half of the game, (he) was great.”
