Wolves, Lynx name Matthew Caldwell as next CEO in Minnesota

Matthew Caldwell is stepping down as the business operations president of the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. He is accepting a 10-year deal as CEO of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. The teams announced the deal on Wednesday. Caldwell will begin overseeing “day-to-day business operations and high-level strategic initiatives for the Timberwolves, Lynx, and (the G League’s) Iowa Wolves” on Sept. 2. It’s a major move by new Timberwolves and Lynx owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez, who assumed full control of those franchises earlier this summer. “I love the NHL. I’ve enjoyed hockey and I’m a big fan of it,” Caldwell said. “But the NBA is just a much bigger, global platform. I really believe in Marc and Alex and their vision and what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to make Minnesota best in class.” Caldwell joined the Panthers in 2014 as chief operating officer before being promoted to CEO in 2016.

Sam Bennett lifelong dream came full circle this week in Holland Landing, Ontario. The Florida Panthers forward returned home with the Stanley Cup and posed for a photo in front of a poster of the very same trophy that once hung in his childhood bedroom. This time, however, he was holding the real thing. The visit marked Bennett’s second straight summer with hockey’s most coveted prize, following back-to-back championships with the Panthers. Cheers rang out as the youngster mimicked the champion’s pose, drawing as much applause as the trophy itself. Forsling, part of the Panthers’ back-to-back title-winning sides, also took the Cup out on the water, lifting it high above his head as his son watched on.

Ter Stegen restored as Captain After Fitness Dispute Resolved

Barcelona have reinstated Marc-André ter Stegen as club captain after settling a disagreement over the goalkeeper’s fitness. Earlier this week, the Catalan side had launched disciplinary proceedings and stripped the 33-year-old of the armband. This followed a row linked to his recovery from back surgery in late July. Reports suggested Ter Stegen had initially refused to release his medical details. This prompted the club to seek La Liga approval to classify him as a long-term injury and reduce his wage bill.  However, Barcelona confirmed late on Friday that the German had signed the required documents. This has closed the matter and restored his captaincy immediately. Ter Stegen addressed the issue on Instagram earlier in the day, rejecting false claims and stressing his willingness to work with the club to resolve the dispute.

Guardiola reveals injury setback for Manchester City star Rodri

The 29-year-old missed most of last season after tearing his ACL against Arsenal, a blow that coincided with City’s dip in form. He was forced off again in their 4-3 FIFA Club World Cup loss to Al-Hilal this summer and is still recovering. Speaking before City’s pre-season friendly with Palermo, Guardiola said Rodri is unlikely to return before September. “Rodri is getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al Hilal. Hopefully, after the international break, he will be really fit,” he explained. He added: “What is important is that he doesn’t have pain because we don’t want Rodri coming back injured. He has been training the last two sessions with us and that’s good.”

Machado Hidden Ball Attempt Backfires

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado hidden ball trick went wrong Saturday night, leading to a run for the Boston Red Sox in the third inning. With Jarren Duran on third after Alex Bregman was caught in a rundown, Machado held onto the ball and tagged Duran after he took a lead. The play would have resulted in an out, but pitcher Wandy Peralta was standing on the rubber without the ball, triggering a balk that allowed Duran to score and put Boston ahead 2-1. Had Peralta been off the mound for example, at the rosin bag, the play would have been legal. “I thought it was a great baseball play.  I’ll take some responsibility,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “You just can’t be on the rubber when that happens. Manny’s IQ shows up again, but it’s something we didn’t work on.”
