Kenny Atkinson Named 2024–25 NBA Coach of the Year

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson has been honored with the Red Auerbach Trophy as the 2024–25 NBA Coach of the Year. In his first year leading the Cavaliers and his fifth overall as an NBA head coach, Atkinson guided the team to a 64–18 record. The Cavaliers also secured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Atkinson becomes just the third coach in Cavaliers history to earn the prestigious award. He has joined Bill Fitch (1975–76) and Mike Brown (2008–09). His 64 wins tie him for the fourth-most victories by a head coach in his first season with a team. Throughout the season, Atkinson was twice named the NBA Eastern Conference Coach of the Month. He received the honor for October/November and again for December. His success also earned him the opportunity to coach in the NBA All-Star Game for the first time.

The deal was initially negotiated during the NFL Scouting Combine but only recently completed. Julian Edelman was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame as its 37th member. After an offseason of roster changes, Kittle expressed his relief that there have been no contract holdouts or quarterback controversies. “I’m happy that we don’t have a bunch of guys holding out for contracts,” Kittle told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan. “I’m glad that we are not having a super drama-filled offseason. I think every year of my career we’ve had a quarterback controversy at some point. And to not have that, it’s going great.” Kittle secured his own contract early in the offseason and noted that the absence of drama has created a positive atmosphere. The 49ers’ offseason focus has included several new free agent signings. Kittle emphasized the importance of getting to know these new teammates before the grind of training camp begins. The Baltimore Ravens released veteran kicker Justin Tucker on Monday. This followed an NFL investigation into allegations of improper conduct during massage therapy sessions. He was accused by 16 massage therapists from eight Baltimore-area spas of inappropriate behavior. The incidents occured between 2012 and 2016 and Tucker has denied the allegations. He also holds the record for the longest made field goal at 66 yards and helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII as a rookie. However, he is coming off his worst season as a professional, recording career lows in field goals made (22) and field goal percentage (73.3).
