Van Nistelrooy Leaves Leicester After Relegation

Ruud van Nistelrooy has left Leicester City by mutual agreement after the club was relegated from the Premier League. The 48-year-old took over in November 2024, but couldn’t stop Leicester from dropping back to the Championship after one season. Leicester said the decision was made together and that Van Nistelrooy’s contract has ended immediately. “Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club,” the statement read. It praised his professionalism and his role in promoting academy players to the first team. Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper and earned four points from his first two games. But things quickly turned bad. Leicester lost 15 of their next 16 matches, including nine straight home games without scoring. “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club,” Van Nistelrooy said. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker waited weeks to hold talks with the club’s board after relegation was confirmed. Leicester went down with Ipswich and Southampton. All three clubs had been promoted together the season before. Leicester will now start life back in the Championship against Sheffield Wednesday on August 10. The club could also face a points deduction after being charged with breaking financial rules.

Kompany: Bayern Munich Will Have “Almost No Preparation” for Bundesliga

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has admitted that his side will begin the 2025-26 Bundesliga season with minimal preparation, due to their involvement in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup this summer. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Bayern’s next Club World Cup match, Kompany said:“For the next season, we will have almost no preparation. ”The tournament, hosted in the United States, runs until July 13, leaving little time for rest or traditional pre-season training. Despite that, Kompany acknowledged that the extended group time has some benefits — especially for new signings like Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof. “We’re building team cohesion… It’s perhaps faster for the integration of new players,” he explained. Still, the Belgian coach admitted Bayern will be straying far from best practices when it comes to physical preparation:“If you look at the scientific research around pre-season prep, we are throwing the book away and just starting the new season with all the pressure to win. ”Kompany compared the environment to that of international tournaments, such as the World Cup or European Championships, noting that unlike national teams, club sides can work on advanced tactics, not just fundamentals.“It’s got its advantages… We’re working on details.” Bayern have already advanced to the next stage of the Club World Cup after thrashing Auckland City 10-0 and beating Boca Juniors 2-1. They face Benfica in Charlotte on Tuesday, looking to seal top spot in Group C. While the Club World Cup offers $1 billion in total prize money, Kompany remains cautious about its cost to domestic league preparation.

The Indiana Pacers Deliver Historic Bench Boost

The Indiana Pacers moved one step closer to their first NBA title Wednesday night. They secured a 116-107 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Bennedict Mathurin exploded for a game-high 27 points in just 22 minutes on 12 shot attempts. He became the youngest player since 1970-71 to score 25+ points off the bench in a Finals game. His aggressive scoring helped the Pacers erase a five-point fourth-quarter deficit.  It was a major bounce-back showing for the 22-year-old swingman, who has endured an up-and-down postseason. After scoring just five points in Game 1, Mathurin seized the moment in front of a home crowd witnessing its first Finals game since 2000. Veteran guard T.J. McConnell also made his mark. He racked up 10 points, five assists, and five steals in 15 minutes. His relentless defense and floor generalship flustered the Thunder and earned him a place in history. He became the first player since 1973-74 (when steals became official) to post 10-5-5 off the bench in a Finals game. Together, Mathurin and McConnell helped swing the series in Indiana’s favor, giving the Pacers a 2-1 series lead heading into Game 4.
