Mbappe and Rodrygo Rescue Real Madrid in 2-1 Win at Alaves

Xabi Alonso’s position as Real Madrid manager appears secure for now after his team battled to a 2-1 victory at Deportivo Alaves. The win marked only their third in nine competitive games, while Alaves have now lost four of their last five LaLiga fixtures. Despite only two sides managing to claim victories at Estadio Mendizorrotza this season, Real Madrid struggled to find an early breakthrough. Kylian Mbappe came close on a couple of occasions in the opening eight minutes but couldn’t hit the target. It was third time lucky for the French forward midway through the first half. Jude Bellingham released him down the left flank, allowing Mbappe to cut inside and curl an unstoppable effort past Antonio Sivera. Los Blancos were denied a quick second goal shortly after when Bellingham’s controlled header from a corner was ruled out for handball. They continued to press, with Federico Valverde narrowly missing from distance before Sivera produced a remarkable double save to deny Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. However, failing to put the game beyond doubt came back to haunt them. Alaves struck out of nowhere when a long ball over the top found Carlos Vicente, who finished past Thibaut Courtois. Although initially flagged for offside, VAR confirmed Vicente had perfectly timed his run. Rodrygo’s free-kick flew over the bar, adding to Real’s early nerves, but he later made amends. Vinicius Junior’s pace on the left allowed him to beat his marker and deliver a low cross that Rodrygo converted to restore the lead. Vinicius also had a penalty appeal turned down, while Bellingham and Brahim Diaz came close to a third. Alaves were unable to create any late chances, leaving Real Madrid to secure a crucial win, extending their unbeaten away streak to six matches and handing the home side their eighth consecutive loss against Los Blancos.

‘Most gifted since Haaland’: Big clubs eye Leipzig star Diomande

RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande has become one of football’s fastest-rising young talents, drawing strong interest from major clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham ahead of 2026. Just 18 months ago he was playing in Florida’s Central Premier Division with DME Academy. After a brief spell at Leganes, Leipzig signed him in July by triggering his €20m release clause — a move Red Bull scouts pushed for after being stunned by his technical ability. Originally viewed as a long-term project, Diomande has exceeded all expectations. Some inside Leipzig now believe he could become a €100m player. The 19-year-old’s rise has been electric. He has seven goals and four assists this season, and he hit a hat-trick in Leipzig’s 6–0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend, with elite scouts watching. Liverpool and Spurs are tracking him closely, while reports suggest at least 10 other major European clubs are also monitoring his progress.

Maresca unhappy with ‘easy goals’ in Chelsea’s late loss to Atalanta

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca lamented his team’s defending after they lost 2–1 at Atalanta in the Champions League. Joao Pedro put Chelsea ahead after 25 minutes, but Atalanta came out stronger in the second half.  Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere scored to turn the match around. Maresca said Chelsea should have extended their lead and criticised the goals they conceded.“After we conceded the 1–1, we lost control,” he said. “Both goals were avoidable. They’re easy goals.” The win moved Atalanta to 13 points and close to direct qualification for the last 16. Chelsea have 10 and likely need to beat both Pafos and Napoli to finish in the top eight and avoid a playoff. Maresca said the focus is on winning their remaining group games. Chelsea return to league action on Saturday against Everton.

Pulisic leads Milan comeback to reclaim Serie A top spot

Christian Pulisic struck twice as AC Milan rallied from 2–0 down to beat Torino 3–2, returning to the Serie A summit and extending their unbeaten league run to 13 games. With manager Massimiliano Allegri suspended and watching from the stands, Milan made a poor start. Fikayo Tomori handled in the box while battling Ché Adams, and Nikola Vlašić converted the 10th-minute penalty despite Mike Maignan getting a hand to it. Torino doubled their lead seven minutes later when Vlašić set up Duván Zapata, whose powerful strike slipped through Maignan. Milan were stunned, but Pulisic’s heroics turned the match around after the break.

Heaven urges Man United to keep pushing for Europe

Ayden Heaven says Manchester United can still force their way back into European football after Monday’s 4-1 win over Wolves. The victory moved United to within one point of the Premier League’s top four. A Champions League return is now in sight. United bounced back from a poor draw against West Ham. Bruno Fernandes scored twice. Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount added goals after Jean-Ricner Bellegarde briefly levelled for Wolves. That was Wolves’ first league goal since October 26. United finished last season in 15th. They missed Europe after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. But the lack of midweek games may help them rebuild under Ruben Amorim. Heaven, still a teenager, said the team responded well. “We dropped points in the last game, and this was the chance to redeem ourselves,” he said. “We did that, especially in the second half.”

Ajax are reportedly set to terminate the loan deal of Liverpool midfielder James McConnell after a disappointing first half of the season. The 21-year-old McConnell joined Ajax on a year-long loan deal last summer after former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga was appointed as Ajax’s manager. McConnell is said to have joined Ajax solely on Heitinga’s recommendation. Ajax were looking to add an experienced defensive midfielder to the squad after captain Jordan Henderson had his contract at the Amsterdam club terminated by mutual consent.
