The Europa League returns this Thursday as the competition record holders Sevilla welcome Manchester United to Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán for the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
The hosts snatched a credible 2-2 draw in the first leg, despite going two goals behind in the first half. So they will hope to build on that second-half performance at home, where they have enjoyed much success lately.
The Andalusian club have lost just one of their last eleven games at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán (W8, D2), scoring 2+ goals in their last seven games at this venue.
Having recorded a pair of home clean sheets and wins against PSV Eindhoven (3-0) and Fenerbahçe (2-0) in this tournament, they will be full of confidence going into this game.
An unbeaten record against United (W2, D2) and an unbeaten start to life under new manager José Luis Mendilibar (W2, D2) will also boost their morale as they attempt to secure progression to their first UEL semi-finals since 2019/20.
Manchester United bounced back from that disappointing 2-2 draw with Sevilla last Thursday to record a huge 2-0 win over struggling Nottingham Forest.
The result gave them complete control of their top four destiny in the PL as they ended the weekend sitting in third position.
They also recorded their seventh clean sheet in their last ten wins in that game, so they should be buoyed by that ahead of this tie.
Another source of confidence will be that they remain undefeated in this competition since an opening matchday home loss to Real Sociedad (W8, D2). Their run includes three trips to Spain (W2, D1).
Therefore, they have every right to be confident of returning home as semi-finalists, especially not having lost any of their last seven UEFA contests on Spanish soil (W5, D2).
Meanwhile, all but two of Sevilla’s last 15 competitive wins were accompanied by a clean sheet. So we might see a low-scoring affair at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, with an under 2.5 goals game the most likely.
Manchester City will look to seal their place in the Bayern Munich when they welcome Manchester City to Allianz Arena this Tuesday for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.
Bayern was beaten 3-0 in the first leg at the Etihad, with goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland condemning the Bavarians to their first defeat in the Champions League this season.
While the game was overshadowed by the altercation between Sadio Mane and Leroy Sane at full time that saw the ex-Liverpool man draw blood from the German winger, Thomas Tuchel will hope that he can channel the inner anger in his players to winning against City at the Allianz Arena.
The ex-Chelsea coach has maintained his side “won’t give up” ahead of this crucial game. However, a 1-1 draw against Hoffenheim at the weekend was far from the ideal preparation for this game. But Bayern’s record at home in the UCL will give them full confidence as they look to become just the fifth side to progress from a UCL knockout tie after losing the first leg by a 3+ goal margin.
But the fact that Bayern have scored more than once in just one of their last six games does not inspire much confidence, while Tuchel has lost each of his last three personal meetings with City boss Pep Guardiola without his side scoring a single goal.
The City manager will look to extend that personal record against Tuchel and to record his 100th Champions League win. Only Carlo Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson reached that landmark before the Spaniard, so it will be a great honour to achieve that feat at the Allianz Arena, where he had a successful stint after leaving Barcelona.
His side comes into this tie on the back of a ten-match winning run in all competitions, last tasting defeat back in early February (W12, D2 since). So they will travel to Munich with good spirits and confidence that they will win her,e, given that they have suffered just one defeat from their 20 meetings with German opposition in the UCL (W16, D3).
But it likely won’t be a walk in the park for the Cityzns, as they have won just one of their last six European road trips (D4, L1). Meanwhile, the fact that Bayern Munich hasn’t lost consecutive UCL matches over 90 minutes since 2014 makes the tie even more tricky.
Inter Milan will look to seal their progression into the semi-final round of the UEFA Champions League when they welcome Portuguese side Benfica to San Siro on Wednesday.
The hosts put one foot into the tournament’s next round when they secured a 2-0 win in the first leg in Lisbon.
However, a shock 1-0 home defeat to Monza at the weekend brought them back down to earth and proved Inter are penetrable at the San Siro. So they must be on their guard to warn off Benfica’s advances and secure a first UCL semi-final spot since 2010.
Considering they have won 17 of the 18 UEFA competition ties in which they have triumphed away from home in the first leg, they look well placed to book a last-four date. So Simone Inzaghi is poised to become the first home-grown Italian coach to lead Inter to the semi-finals of Europe’s premier competition since Eugenio Bersellini in 1980/81.
Like their hosts, Benfica makes the trip to Italy on the back of a shock 1-0 defeat of their own, going down against Chaves in Primeira Liga action. The result extended their losing run across all competitions to three matches, with just one goal scored in that period.
If their recent form doesn’t offer much hope for Benfica, then the fact they have already won on Italian soil this season perhaps does, as they beat Juventus 2-1 in group-stage action. However, overall, they have a poor record against Italian teams, with that win against Juventus being one of just four on Italian soil (D1, L11).
They do appear well placed to improve upon that record here, though, as they come into this tie on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run in UCL away games (W6, D3).
Meanwhile, none of Inter’s last six UCL home games have seen both teams score. So we can expect another low-scoring game of under 2.5 goals.
The 18th edition of one of the best long-standing rivalries in Major League Soccer delivered fantastic goals, another effort from the derby’s goal king and a feat that has never been achieved before, as LAFC celebrated its first Trafico road win, defeating the winless LA Galaxy, 3-2 Sunday afternoon.
“It feels great. I feel like we showed many times that we’re better than them, but for some reason anytime we play here it’s a crazy start,” Carlos Vela said. “After this one, I hope we win more often here and show every time that we play LA Galaxy that we’re the team of this city.
”

Vela played a key role in LAFC’s historic win, kicking off the scoring with a 22nd-minute golazo and adding a second from the penalty spot. This brings his total score to 12 goals, which is more than any other player in EL Trafico history.
“Carlos has a very special left leg and his football IQ is also off the charts,” LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo said. “Carlos has done that time and time again and it’s great to see that, it’s great to see him finishing in the manner that he finishes his chances. He doesn’t get many many chances, but he’s there when we need him and that’s why he is at LAFC and nobody else.”
LAFC: Short rest, no problem
LAFC’s EL Trafico win comes days after the club secured a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals where they’ll face Philadelphia Union in a rematch of last season’s historic MLS Cup – which was won by LAFC using penalty kicks.
The club has had a busy stretch of games, but they emerged from it as the only unbeaten team in Major League Soccer after Matchday 8 (a 5W-0L-2D record).
“It’s very difficult to win a game in this league, especially on the road. This was also our fifth game in two weeks and I think we saw a little bit of that tonight,” Cherundolo said. “To win here and to continue in the Champions League in the fashion we did, and seeing where we are on the table, makes it much easier to forgive the guys for a rather average to below average performance.
“For them to find a way to win after what they’ve been through over the past couple of weeks is absolutely excellent and speaks about their mentality and where we are as a group.”
LA Galaxy: defeated but encouraged
LA Galaxy joined Sporting Kansas City to be the only two teams in MLS that are winless in 2023 (0W-4L-3D record). However, Galaxy coach Greg Vanney saw a glimmer of hope in his team’s play. Tyler Bord scored an outstanding goal from distance, the longest for the Galaxy in MLS since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 40-yard strike on his LA debut in 2018, via Opta.
Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez started his first match of the season in his return from injury and played the entire 90 minutes, providing an emotional spark to a team that desperately needed one. And Riqui Puig was sensational with Vanney saying he played his “best game of the season so far.”
However, the club were brought down by self-inflicted wounds, delivering LAFC’s goals on a gold platter.
“For a lot of the day, I was pleased with our performance, I was pleased with our effort, our energy,” Vanney said. “We punished ourselves today. Today we killed ourselves and that’s unfortunate against a good team that has momentum in their favor.”
After a steep turnover by Gaston Brugman in midfield that assisted Vela’s first goal, the Galaxy entered the half courtesy of Boyd’s first MLS goal.
But “two colossal mistakes” two minutes apart led to Vela’s second goal and Ryan Hollingshead’s goal giving the guests a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to go.
“I’m proud of the guys’ effort.
This is an interesting week for everybody.
But the effort for the guys was fantastic. And I thought at times our performance was fantastic,” Vanney said.
“I’ve never been more sure about this group’s ability to do something special this season than today. We’ve got to cut out the part where we hurt ourselves to make the other team beat us.”
Chicarito described it as LA Galaxy’s best play of the season and, although he said he hates to lose, he will take a loss in the way they did to LAFC over the 3-0 defeat Houston Dynamo FC dealt with them on Matchday 7.
“Today I think regardless of the result, it was the best performance in my opinion that we did because honestly if LAFC is considered the best team in the league, we outplayed them,” he said. “The problem is we did [a] very naive mistake, all of us.”
LAFC intends to maintain their hot start to the season when they visit Nashville SC Saturday (8:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass), while the Galaxy will host Austin FC Saturday (10:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass).
Napoli and AC Milan will continue their recent rivalry this Tuesday when they meet at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League tie.
The hosts are looking to be third-time lucky against AC Milian, having lost their last two head-to-head meetings with the San Siro side. That run includes a 1-0 loss in the first leg of this tie, with an early goal from Brahima Diaz the difference that night.
Luciano Spaletti’s side has followed that loss with a disappointing goalless draw with Hellas Verona at the weekend, meaning that they have failed to score in their last two games. The return of star hitman Victor Osimhen will be a big relief for the hosts, who have enjoyed a solid return of goals when the Nigerian is in the team.
Also, returning to their home will boost their confidence as the hosts boast a proud home record in this competition. They have avoided defeat in their last 12 UCL games at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium (W9, D3). Notably, all four matches in this year’s edition of the competition delivered victories.
Meanwhile, AC Milan could now become the first team to beat Napoli three times in one season since Lazio back in 1994/95, having enjoyed back-to-back success in their last two meetings.
However, the visitors could not take their form against Napoli to the league at the weekend as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Bologna. Even though they remain in fourth position, that result complicated their quest for the Serie A top four.
But Stefano Piolli’s side has been different gravy in the UCL this season, especially at the back. The Rossoneri have shut out their opponents in their last five UCL matches – their best consecutive run of clean sheets since 2004/05 when they went to the competition’s final.
So, we can predict another low-scoring game unless Napoli succeeds in turning on the screw.
Real Madrid will look to seal their place in the semi-final round of the UEFA Champions League when they travel to London on Tuesday to face a struggling Chelsea side.
The Blues are presently out of sorts in all competitions, having yet to win a game since a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in early March. A disappointing 2-1 loss to Brighton last weekend was the latest in poor results.
The loss extended their winless run to six games in all competitions (D2, L4), further complicating their chances of finishing in the top six this season. Confidence is undoubtedly low in Frank Lampard’s team’s camp, and they will face another moment of truth when Madrid comes into town.
Having scored just once in their last five games, it remains to be seen how they can overturn this two-goal deficit against a Real Madrid side that takes things more personally when they meet English teams in this competition.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men will travel to Stamford Bridge as the favourites to win, given that they have netted in each of their last seven UCL fixtures on foreign soil (W4, D1, L2).
They have won three of their last four games against English teams (L1), while the record of four clean sheets from their last five games also makes them a formidable opponent on their day.
However, they will not travel to London with any hint of complacent, given that Chelsea won their previous round against Dortmund despite a first-leg deficit.
But Madrid have won the last four European ties in which they won the first leg 2-0 at home. So they will be expected to easily go through with a goal or two.
Fiorentina and Atalanta will square up this Monday in the 30th Round of the 2022/23 Serie A season.
Fiorentina come into this tie on the back of a morale-boosting 4-1 win over Lech Poznan in the UEFA Conference League quarter-final. The result put them in total control of that tie and extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to an incredible 13 games (W11, D2).
So the hosts will look to continue that incredible run here to keep their pursuit of a European place in Serie A alive. Starting this round seven points behind sixth-placed Atalanta, La Viola can crank up the pressure on the visitors by extending their six-game unbeaten run at home (W4, D2) with another victory.
The host’s form has been down to their defensive solidity as they’ve conceded just 32 goals, a record bettered only by four Serie A clubs this season. Unfortunately, however, they haven’t quite been able to live up to those exemplary standards at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, with the hosts conceding 17 goals across their last eleven Serie A home games, managing just one clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Atalanta will look to get back to winning ways when they travel to Florence on Monday. However, the goal-shy visitors, who have failed to score in four of their last six away competitive matches (W2, L4), might struggle at Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Should Gian Piero Gasperini’s side fail to score again, they risk losing consecutive Serie A away H2Hs for the first time since October 2015 after losing 1-0 here last season.
Recent form suggests Atalanta may struggle to win here, though, given they have recorded just three wins from their last ten competitive matches (D1, L6), bookended by a 2-0 SA defeat against Bologna last weekend.
Meanwhile, ahead of the round, Fiorentina have won a league-high 6.10 corners per league game while conceding a league-low 3.31 corners per match.

Relegation-threatened Leeds United will welcome struggling European hopefuls Liverpool, who are looking to win their first game since March.
Leeds come into this tie on the back of an embarrassing 5-1 loss to a Manchester City side, who condemned them to their 15th loss of the season.
That was also their heaviest loss of the season and firmly entrenched them in the relegation battle. However, they remain outside of the drop zone and still have their destiny in their hands.
But their key struggle this season is personified by the fact they’ve kept only five clean sheets in their last 41 matches. In addition, they have conceded 54 goals this season, which is only better than Bournemouth, who has conceded 57 goals.
However, they scored twice against Liverpool at Anfield on their way to a 2-1 win. So another upset here would secure their first league double over the Reds since the 2000/01 campaign.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven visits to Elland Road (W5, D2), though, since losing in November 2000. So it will be a challenging game for both sides.
But Jurgen Klopp’s side looks like a beatable team, having not won a single game since beating Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield in early March (D2, L3).
They come into this tie on the back of a 2-2 draw with Arsenal. The game showed they still have some fighting spirit, as they came from 2-0 down to snatch a point. That point leaves them sitting in eighth position, a whopping 12 points behind Manchester United and Newcastle United, who share the third and fourth positions.
But they are within striking distance of the Europa League spots, with three just points separating them and sixth-placed Aston Villa with a game in hand. So there is still a chance they can qualify for the Europa League this season if they can start winning games.
Having crashed out of every tournament, that must be their focus this season as they plan their huge summer rebuild.
Meanwhile, only two of Liverpool’s last ten away matches have seen both teams score on the day. So a BTTS/GG prediction might be out of place in this game.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka took to Instagram to apologise to supporters after his crucial penalty miss against West Ham on Sunday.
WHAT HAPPENED? The England international had the chance to hand Arsenal a 3-1 lead early in the second half of his side’s clash with West Ham at the London Stadium, but completely fluffed his lines as he sent his penalty well wide of the post. West Ham went on to grab an equaliser, forcing the Gunners to settle for a point that gives title rivals Manchester City fresh impetus in the race for the trophy.
Following the contest, Saka apologised to Arsenal fans via social media.
“Regardless of the outcome, I’ll always accept my responsibility. Apologies Gunners, I’ll do everything I can to make it right,” he said on Instagram.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Arsenal now lead Man City by just four points atop the Premier League, and Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand. The Gunners have let 2-0 leads slip in consecutive contests, having also been held by Liverpool in a thrilling game at Anfield last week.
AS Roma will look to continue their quest for a top-four finish this Sunday when they welcome Udinese to Stadio Olimpico for the 30th Round of the 2022/23 Seria A season.
Jose Mourinho’s side come into this tie on the back of a disappointing 1- loss to Dutch side Feynoor in the Europa League. However, they will be keen to bounce back here and keep their bid to secure a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, having narrowly missed out last year.
A 1-0 victory last weekend away to Torino saw Roma end last weekend third in the Serie A table. Yet, Mourinho publicly acknowledged that he remains all too aware that could all change if Juventus – seventh on 44 points coming into the round – are successful with their points-deduction appeal.
The hosts have been flying at Stadio Olimpico in 2023, winning nine of their 11 competitive home matches (L2) and keeping a clean sheet on all nine occasions. Mourinho has also won five of his seven personal meetings with Udinese (D1, L1) and will be eager to keep their top-four run going here.
The visitors come into this tie on the back of a 2-2 draw with Monza. The draw was enough to keep them inside the top half of the Serie A table, a whopping 16 points off the bottom three.
They are five points off Juventus in seventh position, so they could still finish in a European spot. However, it could be another disappointing outing for them at the Stadio Olimpico as playing away against teams that start this round in the top half hasn’t brought much joy to Udinese, highlighted by the fact they’ve picked up just two points from seven attempts (D2, L5), failing to score in four of those matches.
Eight defeats in nine away H2Hs won’t boost confidence in the travelling camp either. Also, Roma are the only SA side yet to lose a single point when scoring first at home this season (W9).
After their midweek exertions in the Europa League, Manchester United will turn their attention to the Premier League when they travel to City Ground to face Nottingham Forest.
The hosts desperately need a positive result to boost their Premier League survival bid after a miserable nine-match winless run dropped them into the relegation zone (D3, L6).
A 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, which was bookended by individual errors, left manager Steve Cooper scratching his head and admitting that his side can only blame themselves.
But they will return to City Ground which has often been a source of strength this season, with the Tricky Trees winning 21 of their 27 points at the City Ground. That fortress hasn’t been as strong of late, though, with a four-match winless streak holding progress back (D3, L1).
But Forest still remains tough to beat at home, mainly because they’ve scored in all but one of the PL games they’ve hosted this campaign.
Manchester United endured a frustrating outing in the Europa League on Thursday, with a disappointing 2-2 draw with Sevilla seeing them throw away a 2-0 first-half win.
A season-ending injury to Lisandro Martínez also compounded that result, while veteran defender Rafael Varane was also injured in the game.
They will now travel to City Ground to defend their place in the top four. However, away matches have proved problematic of late, as a return of one win from their last five league road trips represents (D1, L3).The Red Devils have conceded 29 of their 37 PL goals in away matches, averaging 2.07 per road trip. So we will likely see a game featuring BTTS/GG
