Cafu thinks Brazil will win the World Cup

Former Brazil right back and 2002 World Cup winner, Cafu believes Brazil can win the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Brazil has not reached the final of the competition since they won it in 2002 and have continued to struggle to reach it. This year, they have one of the strongest teams in the competition and their performances in the qualifier shows they have what it takes to beat any opponent. The World Cup features many countries who will be looking to earn it and Cafu believes the Selecao now have a balanced team that can win it. ‘I think Brazil will win this year,’ says Cafu via Matchplug. ‘This is the strongest group of players since 2002 and the team don’t rely too much on Neymar, like in the past. Brazil are strong in all areas: defence, midfield and attack. ‘Twenty years without winning a World Cup or even without a final appearance is too much for Brazil. I believe this will end in Qatar. ‘Brazil are ahead of every other team. But I think Argentina are very strong as well. They are playing well and Lionel Messi is a genius. France have the same team that won four years ago. These are the three favourites.’

Benzema will miss the World Cup because of an injury

Karim Benzema has been robbed of the chance to play in his last World Cup as he leaves the France national team camp with a thigh injury. The Frenchman won the Champions League, La Liga and Ballon D’or this year and has been seen as a key member of the France national team that wants to retain the World Cup. Les Bleus has been rocked by injury problems after Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante missed the competition because of injuries. Christopher Nkunku was also injured in training last week and sent home. Benzema becomes the latest member of their squad to leave and it is bad news for Frances. His departure means there is yet one less experienced player in the squad and they will try to show they can deliver without the missing stars. Matchplug understands the injury is serious and could keep him out of action for up to two months.

Saka is prepared to take another England Penalty despite Euro 2020 waves of abuse

Bukayo Saka will step up and take another penalty for the England national team at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup despite being abused by English fans over missing one in the final of Euro 2020. The youngster has been one of England’s finest players since he broke into the national team and was in inspiring form at the Euros. However, he missed the decisive spot-kick against Italy in the final which made England lose the competition and he suffered from so much abuse afterwards. They have selected him in their squad for this year’s World Cup and the youngster is keen to impress at that stage as well. England teammate Aaron Ramsdale says he has the character to take another spot-kick if he has to. He said via Matchplug: ‘ I think he has realised it was just something that happened to him and he would not shy away — he is that type of person. ‘He knows the feeling now and, hopefully, next time he steps up he’ll put the ball in the back of the net.’

Klinsmann tips England to win the World Cup

Former Germany international, Jurgen Klinsmann has tipped England to win the World Cup in Qatar after their performance at the 2018 edition and Euro 2020. The Three Lions remain one of the favourites considering the squad they have and the progress they have made under Gareth Southgate, but there are so many other countries who can beat them to win the competition. Klinsmann was at Tottenham for one season and he was a fans’ favourite to most in the Premier League. He would be on punditry duty during the competition and insists England can do great things. The former USA coach said via Matchplug: ‘If I look at England, the squad knows it is strong. It has proved it over many years. There is a progression in place. ‘They played a fantastic tournament in Russia. Then they played a fantastic Euros but didn’t win it, unfortunately. So now if you are a player or manager with England, your expectation is: ‘We have to go to Qatar and win this thing’. ‘The same thing exists with Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Spain. They go to World Cups to win. England are in that company now.’

Manchester United begins the procedure to sack Ronaldo

Manchester United has started the process of kicking Cristiano Ronaldo out of their club without paying him a dime after his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan. The attacker has been a problem for the club this season after they denied him a chance to leave in the summer because they failed to finish inside the top four. Their new manager Erik ten Hag has not used him often enough and it seems both individuals do not have a relationship. Ronaldo admitted he didn’t respect the gaffer because he did not feel respected by the Dutchman, making it vice versa. However, he gave away too much about the club, which has embarrassed them and they now want him out of their squad. He makes around £500,000 a week, but United wants to sack him without paying him any amount in compensation, Matchplug understands.

The case for not checking every part of the game of football

Making calls in big football games can be a very tough thing for a referee to do in a way that pleases everyone. No matter what the decision, someone, somewhere, will disagree with it. When the stakes are as high as they are in these games, it’s important that the referees get everything as right as they can. This has, broadly, been the advantage of VAR technology—but many feel that VAR goes too far. That there is no need to check every inch of the game as often happens, and that it somehow takes away from the true spirit of the game. Let’s look at a few arguments for this. Slows games down One of the biggest issues with the kind of comprehensive checking that is either in-place or being advocated for is the effect it has on the game’s pace. Football is somewhat unique in its free-flowing, constant pace. Whereas in other sports you might spend just as much time standing around as playing, in football, every second counts. VAR causes an average delay to matches of around 50 seconds, on top of ordinary delays. This might not sound like much, but it’s a big deal in only a 90 minute game. VAR could still play a part—just a reduced one. Reduce impact of goals The moment that your team scores a goal can, for the biggest fans, be simply one of your favourite things to experience. Whether you’re in front of the TV or in the stadium, standing up and cheering with your fellow fans is part of what makes football so magical. But with VAR, any and all goals are up for question, and it won’t be resolved quickly. You can’t just look to the linesman as you can with offside calls. You’ll have to wait to celebrate, and once you’ve waited one second, the moment has already passed. VAR isn’t perfect Of course, the point of VAR is to make decision making errors as infrequent as possible. But the fact is that the technology is still a long way from perfect. Thus, when the VAR makes unfair decisions, they can seem even more crushing to the team that suffers. VAR decisions are around 94% accurate, which may seem like a lot, but to any team that is fed one of those 6% of unfair decisions, it can seem even harder to swallow. Referees aren’t perfect, and we accept that. But it’s much harder to feel it’s fair when the technology gets the calls wrong. This imperfect situation has led to football bookmakers adding clauses in their pay-outs according to Findbettingsites.co.uk and you can understand why, bookmakers and bettors both lose out. Atmosphere Atmosphere in football matches is completely unique. It’s constant, moment-to-moment action, only occasionally stopped for a minute or two at a time, at most. The singing and chanting are continuous, everyone is watching the game at all times, all focused on the same event unfolding before them. VAR breaks up this atmosphere not only because, as we mentioned, it increases time stopped quite considerably, but also because it can be very difficult to fans to understand. Without replays for the fans at the stadium or easy-to-hear announcements, fans might not always understand what’s going on. Negatively affect ref’s decisions Referees themselves are also often put in a difficult position as a result of the VAR. When a referee is given the choice of how and when to make use of the VAR, as they should be, they can come under considerable pressure to use it rather than not. This is going to mean that refs end up feeling a greater pressure to rely on the VAR rather than making their own calls—which is why they’re there in the first place! Again, having VAR check every moment of the game means the game loses part of its original spirit. VAR is and always has been a hotly contested topic in football. It’s unlikely that debate will be fully settled anytime soon, but at the moment, there are plainly many reasons why we don’t need to check every aspect of a game. The problem with the VAR debate is that both sides are a zero-sum game—there’s room for compromise!

Edouard Mendy could leave Chelsea after losing his first-team place to Kepa

Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy is considering his future at the club after struggling to show form and losing his first-team spot to Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Senegalese goalkeeper was injured when Graham Potter first became the Blues manager and Kepa was in goal for weeks. The Spaniard did well before suffering his own injury, which gave Mendy the chance to become the club’s number one again. However, with him in goals, Chelsea has lost three of their last four matches and they are no longer considered strong at the back. This has affected his standing in the club and it means the goalie will likely lose his place on the team when Kepa is back to full fitness. Matchplug understands the Senegal star is now considering his future and he might ask to leave the club by the end of the season if things don’t change.

He insisted he does not respect their manager Erik ten Hag because the Dutchman does not respect him. He also mocked the club for naming Ralf Rangnick as its manager, claiming he had never heard of the Austrian before. Bayern Munich wants to sign Ronaldo

Bayern Munich has revived their interest in Cristiano Ronaldo and the Germans have spoken to the Manchester United man. Ronaldo has struggled to get regular playing time at Old Trafford and wants out. After his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan this week, he may have played his last game for the Old Trafford side. United is prepared to offload him and reports even claim the club is speaking to their lawyers to determine if he has breached his contract obligations. Bayern Munich explored signing him in the last transfer window, before abandoning the move, but the Germans have renewed their interest in his signature, Matchplug understands. They are concerned about the fitness of Sadio Mane who has been injured and could play no part for Senegal at the World Cup. However, it could be a problem for them to pay his huge wages, meaning he might agree to a significant cut to make the move happen.

West Ham not playing to sack David Moyes

West Ham intends to stay faithful to David Moyes during this international break even though it will be the best time for them to replace the Scotsman. The Hammers overachieved in the last two seasons with him as manager, but things have been different this term as they struggle to put good results together. Moyes was backed heavily in the last transfer window, yet his team seems to perform worse than in previous campaigns and that has made some fans call for his sacking. However, a report on Matchplug reveals the Irons will not sack him as they consider his credit still full. Instead, they back him to turn the situation around after the World Cup. The former Manchester United boss will use the next few weeks to get his team prepared for what should be a very tough second half of the season in which his team must perform.
