Texans declare safety Kareem Jackson off waivers from Broncos

Kareem Jackson had a quiet end to his career with the Denver Broncos, which sent him to a familiar team: Houston. Jackson was claimed through waivers by the Texans, according to the league’s transaction wire. The defensive back was waived by Denver after he served a second supension in the 2023 season for an illegal hit, on Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs in the Broncos’ comeback victory over Minnesota in Week 11. He was a healthy scratch in Denver’s Christmas Eve loss to New England and with his roster exemption expiring, the Broncos was left with the option of activating him to their 53-man roster, or release him. They chose the first option, sending Kareem to waivers, where the Texans scooped him up. Jackson started his career at Houston, who chose him with the 20th overall pick of the 2010 draft out of Alabama. He played alongside Texans coach DeMeco Ryans in Houston for two seasons before Ryans went to Philadelphia in 2012. Jackson followed Ryans out of Texas in 2019, entering in the opposite direction of his ex-teammate to Denver, where he played in 69 matches for the Broncos from 2019-2023. Kareem Jackson will return to where his NFL journey began this week, to join a Texans that has surprised the football world with a shocking turnaround in their first season under Ryans’ guidance. Vikings’ TE T.J. Hockenson absent for season with ACL, MCL injury

If the Minnesota Vikings return to the postseason picture, it will have to be without star tight end T.J. Hockenson. Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced on Tuesday that Hockenson had season-ending wounds to both his ACL and MCL. O’Connell added that pass rusher D.J. Wonnum, who was having a sensational campaign, suffered a torn squad. “I can confirm with D.J. Wonnum that he did sustain a tear to his quad. He will be going on injured reserve and he will have that hopefully repaired sometime this week,” O’Connell said. “T.J. Hockenson did sustain an MCL and ACL injury. He will go on IR, as well. Crushed for both of those guys. Two of our most impactful players. Leaders on our team. Kind of set the standard of what we want as Minnesota Vikings in every aspect of who they are as men and teammates and players on the grass. Two guys that will be difficult to overcome their loss, but we’re gonna have to have guys step up, and hopefully still have those guys involved and around our team, because they are like I said, leaders, and very, very important to our locker room.” Considering the late-season wound, Hockenson might not be ready for the beginning of the 2024 campaign. He left Sunday’s defeat by the Detroit Lions early in the third quarter after a catch over the middle.  Hockenson is finishing the 2023 campaign with 95 catches for a team-leading 960 yards and five touchdowns. He is currently second place among tight ends in catches and third in yards through 15 games. The Vikings signed Hockenson to a four-year, $66 million extension this offseason. The loss is difficult for Minnesota, which dropped to a 7-8 on the season, at the No.8 slot in the NFC. While the Vikings attempt to regain their playoff footing sans the star TE, Hockenson being injured could change their approach to 2024.  O’Connell added that rookie receiver Jordan Addision, who also left win an ankle injury Sunday, is considered day-to-day. Nets’ Ben Simmons says no timetable to return from injury

Brooklyn Nets forward Ben Simmons said team doctors have not given him a timetable to return from the nerve impingement in his left lower back. “It is one of those things where you don’t know what time,” Simmons said before the Nets’ game Friday night against Denver. Wounded on November 6th, playing Milwaukee, Simmons has played just six matches this campaign, he is averaging 6. 5 points, 10.8 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 31.8 minutes. “It’s probably one of the most frustrating points of my career because I want to be able to help my team win,” He said. “It’s one of those things that’s a part of sports. Not every game is promised. Injuries happen. Unfortunately, it happened.” Related News: Ja Morant, Joel Embiid win NBA Players of the Week.

Andrelton Simmons announces retirement from MLB

Ex-Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons has announced that he is retiring from Major League Baseball. Jared Tims of TalkinHalos shared this news on X. Simmons is hanging his baseball shows after an 11-year career in the Majors. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 2010 MLB Draft. In 2012, he made his MLB debut, appearing in 49 matches. The shortstop entered the scene in 2013, winning a Gold Glove award and finishing 14th position in National League MVP voting. Simmons won another Gold Glove in 2014 and finished 2015 with the Atlanta Braves.  In the 2015-16 offseason, Atlanta traded Simmons to the Angels for Erick Aybar, Sean Newcomb and Chris Ellis. The trade was an undeniable victory for the Halos. Newcomb gathered 4 wins Above Replacement in the six seasons he spent in Atlanta. Aybar stayed as a replacement-level backup infielder during his one season with the Braves. Ellis was sent to St. Louis a year later, where he made his major league debut. Simmons dominated his first season with the Angels, winning a Gold award and finishing eighth position in the American League MVP voting, the highest of his career. He then had another great year in 2017, winning his fourth and final Gold Glove. In his five years with the Anaheim Ducks, Simmons averaged 4 WAR per season. After he reached free agency in the 2020 season, Simmons ended his play with the Minnesota Twins in 2021 and the Chicago Cubs in 2022. Andrelton Simmons was a career .263 hitter with 70 home runs and 444 runs batted in. Simmons was famous for his defense, as one of the premier shortstop defenders during his 11-year career. His best offensive season came with the Angels, as he slashed 281/. 328/.394 with 37 home runs and 238 RBIs across his five years with the Ducks. Maldonado accepts 1-year deal with White Sox

Martin Maldonado and the Chicago White Sox have entered into a one-year deal plus an option, according to a Major League source, confirming the news on MLB.com Tuesday. The club has not yet confirmed the move. Maldonado spent the last six seasons with Houston after the Astros bought him in a midseason trade from the Angels in 2018. The veteran backstop has a career .207/.282/.349 line with a 72 OPS+ across 13 MLB seasons with the Astros, Angels, Brewers, Cubs and Royals. Renowned for his impeccable defense and staff wielding ability, Martin became Houston’s top catcher across the last half-decade. Despite a .623 OPS in an Astros uniform, that number dropped to .593 the last three seasons. He was slotted in as Houston’s primary catcher due to his defense and rapport with Astros pitchers. 2023 breakout rookie Yanie Diaz and Veteran catcher Victor Caratini whom the Astros signed to a multi-year contract this offseason will takeover catching duties for Houston in 2024. Maldonado also worked with manager Pedro Grifol in Kansas City during the 2019 campaign, when Grifol was part of the Royals’ coaching staff. He played alongside Korey Lee in Houston, with Lee bought at the ‘23 Trade Deadline in exchange for reliever Kendall Graveman as one of team’s potential future catchers. “I got to be around Martín Maldonado, I got to learn from him,” Lee said this past September. “I got to see how he managed a pitching staff at that end. Learned how he communicated with pitchers and it taught me a lot. “I’m going to carry that further into my career and make it my way, but he taught me how to be a professional catcher over there in Houston. They knew how to win and I want to bring that over to the White Sox.” This signing is reasonable for Chicago especially with a young pitching staff that has another backstop to pair with Max Stassi, whom the team got from the Atlanta Braves earlier in the month, and Lee. With a possible turnover coming from a White Sox team lead by new general manager Chris Getz who might be tasked with moving frontline starter Dylan Cease, signing a veteran catcher who has been a part of many winning Astros teams is valuable. Lee, impressed the White Sox with his September work behind the plate, but for his young big league career, Lee is hitting .100 at the plate. Edgar Quero, the team’s 20-year-old switch-hitting catcher ranked No.81 overall by MLB Pipeline, will benefit from working with Maldonado. Chicago was very interested in Maldonado before they acquired Stassi, but that interest continued for a catcher with 202 plate appearances and 65 matches worth of playoff experience. Maldonado (8,663 ⅔ innings) joins Salvador Perez (10,063 ⅔), J.T. Realmuto (8,923 ⅓), Yasmani Grandal (8,404 ⅔) and Yan Gomes (8,242 ⅔) as the only active backstops with over 8,000 innings caught.

raanta called back by the hurricanes

Raanta called back by the Hurricanes from AHL

The Carolina Hurricanes recalled Antti Raanta from Chicago of the American Hockey League on Tuesday.  He was a 6-5-1 with a 3.61 goals-against average, a .854 save percentage and one shutout in 14 games (12 starts) with the Hurricanes before he was reassigned to the AHL on December 17 after clearing waivers. He was 1-0-1 with a 2.90 GAA and .875 save percentage in two matches with Chicago. Raanta permitted six goals on 30 shots in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Nashville Predators on December 15, his last start for the Hurricanes. “Obviously, he’s been part of our group for a while and you don’t like to see that,” coach Rod Brind’Amour said of Raanta the day he was sent down. “But obviously his game wasn’t quite there. It’s such an important position. When the goalie is not quite there, it’s glaring. It is what it is, I guess.” In a similar move, goaltender Yaniv Perets was sent to Norfolk of the ECHL. Perets was called up when Raanta was sent down but did not play a match for Carolina. Raanta is 133-78-28 with a 2.49 GAA, .915 save percentage and 20 shutouts in 267 matches over 11 NHL seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Arizona Coyotes and Hurricanes, and 9-9 with a 2.48 GAA, .911 save percentage and one shutout in 24 Stanley Cup Playoff matches. Pyotr Kochetkov has emerged as Carolina’s No. 1 goalie this season with Frederik Andersen having been out since November 2nd because of blood clotting issues. Kochetkov, who was the starter for 11 of the Hurricanes’ last 14 games, is 7-7-0 with a 2.69 GAA, .894 save percentage and one shutout in 18 games (16 starts). Carolina (17-13-2) plays at the Nashville Predators on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET; BSSO, BSSO), one of the 14 matches scheduled with the NHL resumes play following the three-day holiday break.

inter miami eyes marcos rojo

Inter Miami eyes ex-Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo

Lionel Messi has his eyes and mobile phone out for former Manchester United centre-back Marcos Rojo, as he tries to recruit players to join the Inter Miami team. Rojo is a longtime colleague of Messi’s with the Argentina national team. According to Hernan Castillo of Continental 590 radio in Argentina, both Messi and Inter Miami manager Tata Martino have contacted Rojo over the phone to try and get him to sign up with the MLS team. Rojo is presently a player for the Argentine club Boca Juniors, but at 33, he might want to make one more big career move. According to Castillo, in addition to the MLS club, Brazilian Serie A side Palmeiras are interested in the player too. Marcos played with Messi at two World Cups, including in 2014, when he appeared in the full 120 minutes of the World Cup Final loss to Germany. He has scored three times in 61 caps for his country with all three goals delivered in major tournaments. Rojo’s first was a match-winner over Nigeria in the last match of the 2014 World Cup group stage that watched La Albiceleste win the group. He delivered the second time the following year in the semifinals of the Copa America, securing the first of six goals for his home nation that saw them move to the final of that tournament. Rojo’s last goal was in the 2018 World Cup group stage, once again, a game-winner against Nigeria that watched them barely move on to the knockout stages. Marcos Rojo spent seven years in England with Manchester United, winning four trophies after he was signed by Louis van Gaal in 2014 from the Portuguese team Sporting Lisbon.  He won the FA Cup, League Cup, and Europa League at Manchester.

Montreal’s offence struggles but the defence has disappointed the Canadiens, permitting 3.37 goals per game with seven goals in the last two games. Johnathan Kovacevic and Kaiden Guhle combine for 2.5 defensive point shares and 116 blocked shots, but the unit suffers. On the bright side, goaltender Sam Mountembeault has a .911 save percentage and a 2.79 goals-against average on 439 shots with 3.2 goals saved above average. MatchPlug Prediction On Winnipeg Jets VS Montreal Canadiens  Winnipeg which permits 2.59 goals per game, should hamper Montreal’s offence, which averages 2.70 goals per game, with Morrisey, Neal Poink, and the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone and limiting shots on the net, permitting Hellebuyck to make many big saves. The Jets should win this matchup and cover the spread in a victory on their home ice over the Canadiens. Final Prediction: Winnipeg Jets Spread.

Betting On The Portland Trail Blazers 1XBet Spread: +5.5 1XBet Moneyline: 3.12 1XBet Over/Under: Over 233.5 BetMGM Spread: +5.5 BetMGM Moneyline: 2.90 BetMGM Over/Under: Under 233.5 The Portland Trail Blazers lost to the Utah Jazz on Thursday, 122-114. That was their fifth loss in a row. Utah shot 53.2% in this tournament, taking a 13-point lead into the first half. Portland struggled, hitting 41.7% of their shots. The Trail Blazers have been defeated twice in a row and are 2-7 in Portland this season. Portland has been held to 114 or lower points in four of the five matches during their skid. They average 106.8 points per game. Scoring has not been the Trail Blazers’ main issue, it has been defence, where Portland has permitted 123 points or more in three consecutive games. They are 24th in opponent field goal percentage (48.7%). The Warriors are stuck in a rut lately, not only losing three straight but have lost 12 of their last 16 matches. It is shocking to watch Golden State struggling, hitting 45.1% of their shots, 26th overall. They are 16th in three-point shooting (36.6%) but given that 40 of their average shots per game are from three-point range (40 of 90), this is not good. MatchPlug Prediction On Portland Trail Blazers VS Golden State Warriors The Warriors have defeated the Trail Blazers once this season, winning eight of the last 10 meetings, going 6-3-1 ATS. Portland is a mess presently, the kind of weakness Golden State needs to exploit. Final Prediction: Golden State Warriors spread.
