diggs thankful for time in buffalo despite ups and downs

Stefon Diggs thankful for time in Buffalo despite ‘ups and downs’

In his first interview since being traded from Buffalo Bills to Houston Texans, Stefon Diggs took the high road.  Diggs showed gratitude for his career with the Bills, where he caught 445 passes for 5.372 yards and 37 touchdowns to become a perennial Pro Bowler. He recognized Josh Allen for his efforts in their partnership. And eventually, explained where everything went wrong. “He was an intricate piece of my career,” Diggs said Tuesday of Allen, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback of the Bills. “At that point, when I left Minnesota, I was a good player. But I always felt more for myself. I felt like I was better than that — that I could be better than that. And kind of up to that point, I was just like ‘S—. I’m going to roll the dice and bet on myself.’ “When I got to Buffalo, Josh was and still is my guy. People don’t really understand what it’s like to be out there. He really embraced me. He kind of had that southern hospitality. We spent a lot of time together and I probably wouldn’t be right here if it wasn’t for him. I got a lot of love for that boy, so y’all give him a hug and a kiss for me.” Diggs bloomed in Buffalo, where in four seasons he passed his totals recorded in five years in Minnesota. But his leaving was foreseen. He showed his disappointment and frustration with the Bills’ constant failures to finish deep playoff runs with Super Bowl matches. During a compulsory minicamp in 2023, a short absence caused an internal problem that forced Allen to respond for his teammate. Still, the production justified the shenanigans and the $104 million due to Diggs for four years. When this was no longer feasible, like when Joe Brady replaced Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator during the 2023 campaign and Diggs usage dropped drastically, the time came to trade him. He said he felt in 2023 a parting would happen at some point. “We had some ups and downs especially after the first eight (games). We got a coaching shift and different things going different ways, different schemes,” Diggs said. “You know the ups and downs of it. But for me, you kind of felt it in the air a little bit. When I got traded, I was happy. I was in a good place. Like I said, I told God to light my path and here I am. So, he makes no mistakes.” The Texans did not only take Diggs through trade, but also concluded the move by tearing up his existing contract. They signed him to a new one-year deal that gave him a chance to earn another payday in 2025, should he prove his worth in 2024. “What I’ve seen is a guy who I thought we would get,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said of Diggs on Tuesday. “A guy who’s made plays and every time we’ve thrown him the ball, he’s come down with it. Sure-handed guy. A really good teammate, a great energy around the building and in a locker room with the guys. So I’m excited to continue to see his growth.” Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud set the NFL on fire in his rookie season, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in a landslide. He even got some outside votes for NFL Most Valuable Player. If Stroud begins 2024 by picking up where he left off last season, the new partnership will produce large numbers for both parties. “He has been fitting in great. He came in with his head down and just working,” Stroud said of Diggs. “He’s helping me out a lot. … He’s come in and been a leader, which I’m proud of him for. He has really been unselfish and wanted to see other guys eat. That was his main thing — he wanted to be around other dogs. He stepped into that role where there’s a dog everywhere. He wanted that and that’s what we bring to the table.”

marcano banned for life for betting on own team

Tucupita Marcano banned for life for betting on own team

Tucupita Marcano has been banned for life for placing hundreds of wagers on the Major League Baseball, including on his team’s matches. Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 213 MLB-related bets from October 2022 to November 2023, while he was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tucupita had not played this campaign due to a knee injury. He did not appear in any of the matches before his second stint with the San Diego Padres last November. MLB reports that Marcano bet over $150,000 in total on baseball, with $87,319 of that on MLB-related bets.  Marcano denied that any results in the baseball matches he betted on were compromised, influenced or manipulated in any way.  Michael Kelly, an Oakland Athletics pitcher, who betted on nine MLB matches, has been banned for one year. Kelly placed a total of $99.22 for a net win of $28.30 from those wagers. “The strict enforcement of Major League Baseball’s rules and policies governing gambling conduct is a critical component of upholding our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. MLB began an investigation into gambling after catching wind of it from sports betting companies. The last baseball player to get a lifetime ban for gambling is New York Giants outfielder Jimmy O’Connell in 1924. Three minor league players have been banned for breaching betting rules. Padres pitcher Jay Groone, Philadelphia Phillies infielder Jose Rodriguez and Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank are banned too.

javier to get tommy john surgery

Cristian Javier to get Tommy John surgery

Houston Astros starting pitcher Cristian Javier will get Tommy John surgery on Thursday. The Astros have not yet confirmed the news, which The Athletic first reported. Javier, who has been absent since May 27, searched for a second opinion on his right forearm this week. Dr. Keith Meister examined him, and recommended surgery. The Athletic reports. Last week, Javier could not throw a scheduled bullpen session and joined the injured list for the second time this season. He was out from April 21-May 11 previously due to neck pain. Javier needing surgery is the latest blow for an Astros team that has received a series of bad news lately. Right-handy José Urquidy is looking for a second diagnosis on his right forearm. While Houston has refused to comment on his status, it has been widely reported that he might get surgery, too. This leaves the Astros with no option than to keep navigating the campaign with a stretched out rotation hosting Framber Valdez, Justin Verlander, Hunter Brown, Ronel Blanco, and Spencer Arrighetti. In his last three starts in May before his injury, Javier permitted 11 runs, spanning 11 ⅓ innings. Six days after his last outing on May 21, the Astros placed him on Injury List, stating pain in his right arm. Javier signed a five-year extension contract worth $64 million with Houston in the spring of 2023. He is earning $7 million this season and is set to earn $10 million in 2025, $21 million in 2026 and 2027.

Olympic wrestling gold medalist, Gable Steveson, signs with Bills as DT

One of the greatest wrestlers in NCAA history, Gable Steveson is trying pro football. The Buffalo Bills are signing two-time NCAA Division I national champion and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson as their defensive tackle. The team announced this on Friday. In a corresponding move, the Bills released punter Matt Haack. Steveson, 24, had an illustrious career as a three-time All-American at the University of Minnesota, and won the freestyle wrestling gold medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics. He had a brief stint wrestling in the WWE. At 6-foot-1, Steveson competed in the heavyweight class in college; which caps out at 285 pounds, but is listed at 265 pounds, making for a light interior defensive lineman. If he added 20 pounds, he would be like Aaron Donald in terms of basic measurables. But there is no telling where Stevenson stands in terms of weight. Steveson is considered for this successful wrestling career and athleticism, and Buffalo wants him in the summer. That is when the roster allotments permit such experimentation. Fans will see where the medalist fits in and if he will be a perfect fit.

biden hosts chiefs after super bowl win

President Joe Biden hosts Chiefs after Super Bowl win: ‘Welcome back to the White House!’

It took a long time for President Joe Biden to honour the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time at White House. Now it has become tradition. President Biden for the second time in many years, welcomed and celebrated the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs, on Friday. This visit is after their Super Bowl LVIII overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers. “Welcome back,” Biden began. “Welcome back to the White House!” Last year’s tournament was remarkable for the Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who made an impromptu trip to the podium, before quarterback Patrick Mahomes did a spot-on secret service impression by calmly and cooly whisking away his top receiver.  This time, Biden spoke, along with Chiefs owner and CEO Clark Hunt before he called up Kelce. “I’d have Travis come up here, but God only knows what he’d say,” Biden jokes. “Travis come here. It’s all yours pal.” Kelce did not miss a beat, delivering a succinct speech amid laughter from teammates and the president. “My fellow Americans, it’s nice to see you all yet again,” Kelce said. “I’m not gonna lie, President Biden, they told me if I came up here I’d get tased, so I’m going to go back to my spot.” Biden later handed over the stage to Hunt. “I’m incredibly proud of our players and coaches,” Hunt said. “This season, with a target on their backs, they overcame adversity and got through perhaps the toughest group of playoff opponents in league history. They have etched their names in the NFL history books as just the second back-to-back Super Bowl championship team this century.” By winning the Super Bowls again and their third in five seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs are a dynasty and as mentioned by Hunt, their latest title contest might have been their most daunting. Before this past season, the Chiefs had nothing but home matches. But by securing their fourth Super Bowl title in five seasons, they went on the road for the first time in that duration. During the aforementioned 2023 playoff run, Kansas City, started by beating the Miami Dolphins in frigid weather at Arrowhead Stadium. Next they travelled to defeat the second-seeded Buffalo Bills and then the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game. After Hunt’s speech, he invited head coach Andy Reid, who gave Biden a Chiefs helmet. The president wore the helmet to a round of applause. “Winning back to back, I kinda like that,” quipped Biden, who’s running for reelection this fall. With the 2024 NFL season starting in September, Kansas City will strive to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. As such, Hunt is hoping to keep the burgeoning Kansas tradition of spring trips to the White House. Hunt Said: “We have greatly enjoyed our time here today and we look forward to the challenge of making this an annual trip.”

kings extend the contract of mike brown

Sacramento Kings extend the contract of coach Mike Brown

Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown will reportedly be staying with the Kings for a longer duration. Reports came out late Friday night, that the two-time Coach of the Year winner and the Kings, signed a re-negotiated two-year extension that would keep him with the team through 2026-27. ESPN first reported the deal and said that Brown will receive a $4 million raise to $8.5 million for next season and the $8.5 million a year for two extra seasons added to his last deal. Brown secured a 94-70 record in two seasons with Sacramento. He led the Kings to their first playoff spot since 2006 in his first year and missed a return to the playoffs this last campaign. Sacramento lost a play-in match for the eighth seed to New Orleans after going 46-36 in the regular season. Mike has been a significant part of Sacramento’s transformation, helping the club end the longest playoff drought in NBA history and winning his second career coach of the year award. Brown and Rick Adelman are the only Kings coaches to lead them to a winning record in any season since they moved to Sacramento in 1985. Mike Brown has a 441-286 career record with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Kings.

nugent-hopkins awesome for oilers

Nugent-Hopkins ‘awesome’ for Edmonton Oilers in Game 5 win against Dallas Stars

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is a coach’s dream according to Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl. The longest-serving member of the club met the billing against the Dallas Stars in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final at American Airlines Center on Friday. Nugent-Hopkins scored two power-play goals in a 3-1 victory that gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. Edmonton can enter the 2024 Stanley Cup Final with a victory in Game 6 at Edmonton on Sunday (8 p.m. ET; TVAS, SN, TNT, truTV, MAX). “He’s so valuable in every facet of the game. He touches every part of the game,” Draisaitl said prior to the victory. “Have you guys ever seen him make a mistake? I really haven’t. He’s just such a smart, good hockey player and he’s probably the coach’s favourite player in the world.” Before that match, Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said his favourite player always changes, but there is no doubt who received that honour on Friday. “I actually saw Ryan tonight, and I told him tonight, he’s my favourite,” Knoblauch said. “Two goals tonight. Obviously the power play was really big. [He’s] a part of the penalty kill. He had a good game. A lot of guys had a good game.” Nugent-Hopkins opened the scoring by batting the rebound of an Evan Bouchard shot past Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger at 14:09 of the first period. He scored another goal to make it 2-0 at 1:06 of the second period, sending a shot past Oettinger from the slot off a pass from Draisaitl. “We gave ourselves a chance here (to win the series) and that’s all you can ask,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “I thought we played a great game, a pretty full 60 (minutes), and now we get a chance to close it out on home ice. It’s going to take everything, an effort like we had tonight.” It has been a long road for the Oilers forward, who was the No.1 pick by Edmonton in the 2011 NHL Draft and is in his 13th season with the team. Nugent-Hopkins was part of an initial rebuild that included No.1 picks Taylor Hall (2010) and Nail Yakupov (2012) but it never held. It was when Edmonton won the 2015 NHL Draft Lottery and chose Connor McDavid No.1 that things began to change. “He gets asked to do so much on this team, whether it’s on the kill, big draws on the kill, he’s got a big responsibility on the power play,” said McDavid, the Oilers captain. “He’s asked to do everything and always delivers, and tonight was big. He was awesome.” Nugent-Hopkins had not played in a Stanley Cup Playoff game in his first five seasons, until the Oilers snapped a 10-season postseason drought in 2017. He has 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) in 7 matches in the playoffs this campaign, and 59 points (16 goals, 43 assists) in 66 NHL postseason matches. “It’s the furthest we’ve been in a while. It’s a lot of fun,” Nugent-Hopkins said prior to the game. “This is why we do it. This is why we work so hard and play. Obviously when you’re in it, you’re just playing and looking for that next win, so it’s not like you sit back and reflect too much on it while you’re in the moment. At the same time, it’s exciting and we understand where we are and the opportunity we have ahead of us, so it’s fun to be a part of it.” Nugent-Hopkins endured tough terms with the Oilers before they became Stanley Cup contenders. He is the only player left from the earlier rebuild and rededicated to the organisation, when he signed an eight-year contract on June 29, 2021, that runs through the 2028-29 season. “I think your early years, especially if you’re coming from junior where you had some success, it can be frustrating for sure to be missing the playoffs year in and year out, but at the same time, you get extra time to work on your game in the summer,” Nugent-Hopkins said. “As a young kid there’s lots to grow into physically and mentally. You kind of mature and figure out how you’re going to be a good player in the League.” Missing the playoffs in his early seasons, made him appreciative of the present run. Edmonton has reached the playoffs for a fifth straight season, and have gone through heartbreak in the postseason. Now Nugent-Hopkins and the Oilers are one step away from facing the Florida Panthers or New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Final, where they have not been since 2006. “Definitely the crowd is going to be buzzing for sure, it’s going to be loud and it’s going be exciting,” Nugent-Hopkins said of Game 6 at home. “For us, it’s about controlling the emotions, playing within ourselves and trusting our game, and it should be good enough to get the job done.” When he first came into the league, Ryan was the face of Edmonton’s future. Although he does not seem to have aged since joining the Oilers from Red Deer of the Western Hockey League. Nugent-Hopkings has grown into one of the best two-way players in the NHL. “I think he’s the heartbeat of this team,” defenseman Mattias Ekholm said. “He’s been here a long time. He’s the one that shows the culture. He’s a hardworking guy, and I think his game suits that perfect where he is so responsible defensively but still a threat and part of that power-play unit that is probably one of the most lethal ones in the game. I have nothing but praise for him. I think he’s a great guy off the ice as well, so he does it all. ” He is one of the few players on the roster who plays a major role in all contests. He is on the first line with McDavid and Zach Hyman, plays on the first power-play unit and kills penalties. “Definitely, it’s something that

lópez apologizes to mets after postgame comments

Jorge López apologizes to Mets, after postgame comments

New York Mets reliever Jorge López apologized to his teammates, coaches, fans and front office’’ for his actions and comments. López’s words he was ejected from the Mets’ 10-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, led to the team designating him for assignment. In an Instagram post written in Spanish-language, López wrote: “I had no intention of disparaging the New York Mets organization.” López was sent out of the match for arguing a check swing with third-base umpire Ramon DeJesus. He flung his glove into the Citi Field stands as he left the field. Afterward, López showed no remorse for that action, saying in a post match interview that he had no regrets. Much of the backlash surrounding his interview came from a debate whether he had referred to the Mets as  “the worst team in the whole [expletive] MLB” or called himself “the worst teammate in the whole [expletive] MLB.” In his post, López clarified that he was referring to himself as “the worst teammate,” which was a shift from what he told a team official in Spanish immediately after the interview. “Unfortunately, my efforts to address the media in English created some confusion and generated headlines that do not reflect what I was trying to express.” This is what the translated text of López’s Instagram post read. Before Thursday’s match, manager Carlos Mendoza refused to discuss why the club designated López for assignment, stating: “We have standards here. I told you guys yesterday behaviors like that, we’re not going to tolerate that. That’s why we made the decision. “When you’re not playing well, guys will show emotions. There’s frustrations. But there’s a fine line, and yesterday, we went over that line. And we’re not going to tolerate that.” The Mets, who officially designated Jorge for assignment on Thursday afternoon, have seven days to trade him or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers. He has a good chance of another club signing him because of his relatively low $2 million salary and effective results so far this campaign, including a 3.76 ERA in 28 appearances. But López  has thrown his last pitch for the New York Mets. The club chose left-hander Danny Young to replace him on the roster and have already moved past his outbursts. Mendoza said, “I wasn’t happy, but let’s move on.”
