kakko pens 1-year $2.4 million contract with rangers

Kakko pens 1-year, $2.4 million contract with Rangers

Kaapo Kakko signed a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the New York Rangers on Thursday. The forward was in the last season of a two-year contract he signed on July 28, 2022 and could not have become a restricted free agent on July 1.  “We’ll see but all the things over here I like,” Kakko said June 4. “The team’s great. Everyone wants to win. I feel there is a chance to win. … I like it here.” Kakko had 19 points (13 goals, six assists) in 61 regular-season matches and two points (one goal, one assist) in 15 Stanley Cup Playoff matches. He was scratched for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Florida Panthers but played the final four matches of the series, which New York lost in six. “Playoffs were different,” Kakko said. “Of course everyone wants to play. … I was not happy I [was] not in the lineup, but I still wanted to win. I was hoping for the win for the team and keep going and then get back to the lineup at some point, but I can say I was not happy and I think all the guys in this room, like everyone, want to play.” Kakko was chosen by the Rangers with the No.2 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. He has 117 points (57 goals, 60 assists) in 300 regular-season matches and nine points (four goals, five assists) in 44 playoff games.

jaylen brown reaches top spot after game 3

Finals MVP Ladder: Jaylen Brown reaches top spot after Game 3

Boston Celtics Jaylen Brown reaches the top spot in the NBA Finals MVP Ladder. Three days of consistent Jayson Tatum consternation all over the globe appeared equivalent to the Dallas Mavericks calling out the “Candyman’’ five times in front of a mirror. Tatum heard the summon and responded loudly in Game 3, holding off the Mavericks alongside Jaylen Brown. Both players shared 61 points in a 106-88 win over Dallas in the absence of Kristaps Porzingis.  Boston’s performance ruined any chances Kyrie Irving had at redemption that night. Irving shook off duds in Games 1 and 2 with a game-high 35 points, only to witness that effort crumble when Luka Doncic fouled out with 4:12 left. The Celtics ride a dominating 3-0 series lead in the NBA Finals presented by YouTube TV into Friday’s possible elimination clash at American Airlines Center. No NBA club has ever rallied from down 3-0 to a win of best-of-seven series.  Here are the Top 5 in the 2024 Race to the NBA Finals MVP Ladder after Game 3: 1. Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics Last ranking: No. 3 NBA Finals stats: 24.3 ppg, 6 rpg, 5.7 apg. Brown has been consistent in scoring. He delivered a game-high 15 points in the third quarter, combining to outscore Dallas 22-19, building a 15-point lead, before fouling out Doncic with the game on the line. As usual, Brown was clutch down the stretch.  2. Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics Last ranking: No. 4 NBA Finals stats: 21.7 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 7.3 apg. Tatum began fast with 13 points in the first frame on his way to matching Irvings’ game-high 20 points in the first half. He kept Boston in the contest over that span as Irving and Doncic combined for 37 points before Brown joined the party in the second half. Tatum earned his triumphant stroll to the visitor’s locker room. 3. Kyrie Irving, Dallas Mavericks Last ranking: No. 5 NBA Finals stats: 21 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.3 apg Irving averaged 26.5 ppg in the first round, 15.7 ppg in the conference semifinals and 27 ppg in the West Finals. He averaged 14 in Games 1 and 2 on 35.1% shooting and was 0-for-8 on 3-pointers. In Game 3, Irving was 4-for-5 from range in just the first half to become the first Mavericks besides Doncic to hit multiple 3s in the series. 4. Jrue Holiday, Boston Celtics Last ranking: No. 1 NBA Finals stats: 15.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 4.3 apg. Derrick White deserves a mention after his performance in Game 3 (16 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks). But Holiday is in this spot because his consistent, versatile and hustles in this series. His scoring numbers may not be high, but his effort is. Jrue won’t completely shut down his defensive assignments, but he will certainly make life hard on them.  5. Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks Last ranking: No. 2 NBA Finals stats: 29.7 ppg, 9 rpg, 6 apg.  A difficult first-half showing. But Doncic fouled out for the third time in his career and the first time in the playoffs. His disqualification could not have come at a worse time with 4:12 left and Dallas trailing by 3. The Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has talked to Doncic several times for allowing arguments with officiating to take him out of matches.

dl calais campbell signing with dolphins

DL Calais Campbell signing with Dolphins

Calais Campbell is not retiring, although he is going to Florida. Campbell, a six-time Pro Bowler and former Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, is signing a contract with the Miami Dolphins to play his 17th season. NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported. Having contemplated retirement in past seasons, Campbell is now bound for his fifth NFL franchise as he goes to the Sunshine State. This is where he had his most successful run with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2017-2019, securing Pro Bowl accolades and his only All-Pro honour. Calais was originally selected in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, he also played for the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons last season. Now, he has a homecoming to look forward to, as the University of Miami product will provide the Dolphins with a boost on a defensive line that has a touch of youth and experience, alongside injury concerns.  Both Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips suffered season-ending injuries in 2023 and Miami allowed Christian Wilkins walk in free agency, where he joined the Las Vegas Raiders. Campbell, who has always brought a positive energy to the locker room, should bring veteran leadership, the versatility to play inside or on the edge and still has some pass-rushing punch left. He’ll join a group that includes Zach Sieler, Teair Tart, Da’Shawn Hand, Shaquil Barrett and rookie first-rounder Chop Robinson. Campbell secured 6.5 sacks last year for the Falcons and had 10 tackles for loss, each his best numbers since his final year in Jacksonville. Calais is the ranked 50th on Gregg Rosenthal’s Top 101 free agents list, and his the newest addition to a made-over Miami defence, that includes veterans Barrett, Jordan Poyer, Jorydn Brooks, Kendall Fuller and others. There is also Anthony Weaver the new defensive coordinator, who Campbell spent some seasons with in Baltimore.  It might be Campbell’s last season or not. Either way, he is returning to Miami, hoping to bring some of that veteran experience to a Dolphins squad for their third straight playoff spot.

martinez makes 321st career hr his first walk-off shot

Martinez makes 321st career HR his first walk-off shot

New York Mets hitter, J.D. Martinez has often been teased by his loved ones that he never hit a walk-off homer during his 14 years in the big leagues. This all changed Thursday night at Citi Field.  New York’s bats were cold until they rallied in the late innings, rounding off with Martinez delivering the first walk-off home run of his career for a 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins. The Mets were down 2-1, when they scored the winning run off closer Tanner Scott in the ninth inning. Francisco Lindor led off with a walk. Two batters later, Martinez stepped to the plate and Lindor clinched second base. On a 3-1 pitch, he hit the ball over the right-centre-field fence to win the match. Martinez had hit 320 career homers without a walk-off shot before Thursday. “I couldn’t believe it when I was just told [about what Martinez accomplished],” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “I’ve seen this guy play for so many years and have a successful career. He is a pretty good hitter. When Martinez told me that, I was like, ‘No way.’ Scott stated he made serious mistakes before permitting the Martinez dinger. “I shouldn’t have walked Lindor to start it off and then made probably three up and away pitches too much to J.D.,” Scott said. “And he almost got me the other day, and then of course I threw a slider that he got to, and that’s his honey hole and just missed location. I shouldn’t have fallen behind.” Martinez’s 320 career home runs before his first career regular-season walk-off homers are the third most in MLB history, trailing only Max Teixeira (408) and José Bautista (336), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.  “It was definitely cool. I’ve hit a lot of late-inning home runs and [had] big hits, but never a walk-off home run,” Martinez said. Martinez was not certain if the ball was out of the park. Many times this season he has seen balls go as far as the warning track at Citi Field. “I said, ‘If that doesn’t go, what does?’ he said. After ending the match with the monster shot, Martinez was teased again by his family and friends. “I heard from everybody. My friends are already on me. [They said], ‘It’s only taken him [14] years.’ It’s funny,” Martinez said.

celtics vs mavericks series, schedule, and recap

NBA Finals: Celtics VS Mavericks series, schedule and recap

It would appear that the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks wanted to get on with their last matches and have enough prep time before Game 1 of  the Celtics VS Mavericks 2024 NBA Finals on June 6.  Boston was the league’s best team by record all season, winning the East and clinching home court for as long as they needed it, including this round.  The Mavericks went 50-32, which is worth noting would have tied for second in the East with New York. That still was 14 matches off the Celtics’ pace and good for just the No.5 seed in the West. That left Dallas playing from down under to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers, the Oklahoma Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves, all while establishing themselves as title contenders at each step.  Boston stayed above the fray as favourites, bringing criticism for lone missteps against the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers. It also permitted some critics to judge forward Jayson Tatum’s heat. The Celtics won both meeting against the Mavericks this campaign. They won 119-110 at the American Airlines Center and defeated Dallas again 138-110 on March 1 at TD Garden. This is the Celtics’ 23rd visit to the finals. The Mavericks has made it twice before, this one 13 years after its 2011 upset championships over the first edition of Miami’s “super team’’. sutton to sign with steelers

Veteran cornerback Cam Sutton to sign with Steelers

Cam Sutton is coming back to Pittsburgh. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday, that Sutton is signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers later announced a one-year contract, releasing receiver Izaiah Gathings in a similar move. Sutton spent his first six seasons in Mike Tomlin’s system before signing in Detroit last offseason. He struggled greatly on the field in 2023. Off-field issues this offseason led the Lions to release him in March. That was after an arrest warrant was issued for him for an alleged domestic violence incident. Sutton turned himself in to the police and reportedly started a pretrial diversion program on misdemeanor battery charges. Corner depth was a challenge for Steelers this offseason. Joey Porter Jr. showed the physical ability to be No.1 CB. The trade for Donte Jackson gave Pittsburgh an excellent top-two, but there was little else beyond. Sutton’s last season in Pittsburgh was his best. According to Nex Gen Stats, he permitted a career low 44.4% completion rate and -8.5 receptions over expected. If he comes back to anything close to that level, the Steelers secondary will be solid in 2024.

diggs thankful for time in buffalo despite ups and downs

Stefon Diggs thankful for time in Buffalo despite ‘ups and downs’

In his first interview since being traded from Buffalo Bills to Houston Texans, Stefon Diggs took the high road.  Diggs showed gratitude for his career with the Bills, where he caught 445 passes for 5.372 yards and 37 touchdowns to become a perennial Pro Bowler. He recognized Josh Allen for his efforts in their partnership. And eventually, explained where everything went wrong. “He was an intricate piece of my career,” Diggs said Tuesday of Allen, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback of the Bills. “At that point, when I left Minnesota, I was a good player. But I always felt more for myself. I felt like I was better than that — that I could be better than that. And kind of up to that point, I was just like ‘S—. I’m going to roll the dice and bet on myself.’ “When I got to Buffalo, Josh was and still is my guy. People don’t really understand what it’s like to be out there. He really embraced me. He kind of had that southern hospitality. We spent a lot of time together and I probably wouldn’t be right here if it wasn’t for him. I got a lot of love for that boy, so y’all give him a hug and a kiss for me.” Diggs bloomed in Buffalo, where in four seasons he passed his totals recorded in five years in Minnesota. But his leaving was foreseen. He showed his disappointment and frustration with the Bills’ constant failures to finish deep playoff runs with Super Bowl matches. During a compulsory minicamp in 2023, a short absence caused an internal problem that forced Allen to respond for his teammate. Still, the production justified the shenanigans and the $104 million due to Diggs for four years. When this was no longer feasible, like when Joe Brady replaced Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator during the 2023 campaign and Diggs usage dropped drastically, the time came to trade him. He said he felt in 2023 a parting would happen at some point. “We had some ups and downs especially after the first eight (games). We got a coaching shift and different things going different ways, different schemes,” Diggs said. “You know the ups and downs of it. But for me, you kind of felt it in the air a little bit. When I got traded, I was happy. I was in a good place. Like I said, I told God to light my path and here I am. So, he makes no mistakes.” The Texans did not only take Diggs through trade, but also concluded the move by tearing up his existing contract. They signed him to a new one-year deal that gave him a chance to earn another payday in 2025, should he prove his worth in 2024. “What I’ve seen is a guy who I thought we would get,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said of Diggs on Tuesday. “A guy who’s made plays and every time we’ve thrown him the ball, he’s come down with it. Sure-handed guy. A really good teammate, a great energy around the building and in a locker room with the guys. So I’m excited to continue to see his growth.” Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud set the NFL on fire in his rookie season, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in a landslide. He even got some outside votes for NFL Most Valuable Player. If Stroud begins 2024 by picking up where he left off last season, the new partnership will produce large numbers for both parties. “He has been fitting in great. He came in with his head down and just working,” Stroud said of Diggs. “He’s helping me out a lot. … He’s come in and been a leader, which I’m proud of him for. He has really been unselfish and wanted to see other guys eat. That was his main thing — he wanted to be around other dogs. He stepped into that role where there’s a dog everywhere. He wanted that and that’s what we bring to the table.”

marcano banned for life for betting on own team

Tucupita Marcano banned for life for betting on own team

Tucupita Marcano has been banned for life for placing hundreds of wagers on the Major League Baseball, including on his team’s matches. Marcano placed 387 baseball bets, including 213 MLB-related bets from October 2022 to November 2023, while he was playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tucupita had not played this campaign due to a knee injury. He did not appear in any of the matches before his second stint with the San Diego Padres last November. MLB reports that Marcano bet over $150,000 in total on baseball, with $87,319 of that on MLB-related bets.  Marcano denied that any results in the baseball matches he betted on were compromised, influenced or manipulated in any way.  Michael Kelly, an Oakland Athletics pitcher, who betted on nine MLB matches, has been banned for one year. Kelly placed a total of $99.22 for a net win of $28.30 from those wagers. “The strict enforcement of Major League Baseball’s rules and policies governing gambling conduct is a critical component of upholding our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. MLB began an investigation into gambling after catching wind of it from sports betting companies. The last baseball player to get a lifetime ban for gambling is New York Giants outfielder Jimmy O’Connell in 1924. Three minor league players have been banned for breaching betting rules. Padres pitcher Jay Groone, Philadelphia Phillies infielder Jose Rodriguez and Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Andrew Saalfrank are banned too.

javier to get tommy john surgery

Cristian Javier to get Tommy John surgery

Houston Astros starting pitcher Cristian Javier will get Tommy John surgery on Thursday. The Astros have not yet confirmed the news, which The Athletic first reported. Javier, who has been absent since May 27, searched for a second opinion on his right forearm this week. Dr. Keith Meister examined him, and recommended surgery. The Athletic reports. Last week, Javier could not throw a scheduled bullpen session and joined the injured list for the second time this season. He was out from April 21-May 11 previously due to neck pain. Javier needing surgery is the latest blow for an Astros team that has received a series of bad news lately. Right-handy José Urquidy is looking for a second diagnosis on his right forearm. While Houston has refused to comment on his status, it has been widely reported that he might get surgery, too. This leaves the Astros with no option than to keep navigating the campaign with a stretched out rotation hosting Framber Valdez, Justin Verlander, Hunter Brown, Ronel Blanco, and Spencer Arrighetti. In his last three starts in May before his injury, Javier permitted 11 runs, spanning 11 ⅓ innings. Six days after his last outing on May 21, the Astros placed him on Injury List, stating pain in his right arm. Javier signed a five-year extension contract worth $64 million with Houston in the spring of 2023. He is earning $7 million this season and is set to earn $10 million in 2025, $21 million in 2026 and 2027.
