kelly speaks on coin toss decision to draft brock bowers

Champ Kelly on ‘coin toss’ decision to draft Brock Bowers: ‘Can’t confirm that at all’

The Las Vegas Raiders had a coin-flip call with the No.13 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. General Manager Champ Kelly has weighed in on the accuracy of this claim. Vegas chose tight end Brock Bowers with the pick, but apparently, the decision was close.  Detroit Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold, while speaking, said that the Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce told him it was a coin flip between he and Bowers at No. 13. “(The Lions) knew that the Raiders, there was a possibility that they took me,” Arnold told The Next Round podcast. “And, actually, the Raiders coach, they called me after the draft, they were like, ‘We actually had a coin toss between you and Brock Bowers. It landed on him.’” Perhaps Arnold meant pierce was figuratively using the phrase “coin toss’’ to imply that there was a debate over the two players and it was a close call in the Vegas draft room.  Las Vegas assistant GM Champ Kelly was asked about what Arnold said on Wednesday. “I can’t confirm that at all,” he said. “Terrion is a good player. I’m excited to watch his career and watch him play. But we drafted Brock, and we’re excited to get him here. And I don’t think anyone else in our whole draft room felt any other way.” “Can’t confirm” isn’t exactly “lol, no way,” but it should be presumed that Tom Telesco did not decide the team’s future with a flip’s fate.  Coin or not, the Raiders choose Bowers as another weapon to a passing offense that has Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers. One of the draft’s top talents, Vegas will use Bowers as a multifaceted weapon during this rookie campaign. “(His) position is tight end, but we saw him as a playmaker,” Kelly said on Wednesday. “He is going to be a fun piece to have. We’ll see what defenses deploy against him when he is on the field.” Kelly’s comment explains how the Las Vegas Raiders see Bowers and 2023 second-round tight end Michael Mayer as complementary pieces, who could spend a lot of time in Luke Getsy’s offense.

kucherov, mcdavid named hart trophu finalists

Kucherov, McDavid, MacKinnon named Hart Trophy finalists

The Professional Hockey Writers Association, will announce the winner of the Hart Trophy award, given yearly to the NHL player voted most valuable to his team at a later date. Right now, Kucherov, McDavid, and MacKinnon are finalists. Kucherov led the league with 144 points (44 goals, 100 assists) in 81 matches, the highest point total of his NHL career and the most in Tampa Bay Lightning history. This surpasses the 128 points (41 goals and 87 assists) he had in 2018-19. The forward won the Art Ross Trophy, awarded to the player with the most points in an NHL season. He won the Hart Trophy in 2018-19. McDavid and Kucherov were the first players to have 100 assists in a season since Wayne Gretzky’s 122 for the Los Angeles Kings in 1990-91. His 53 power-player points (13 goals, 40 assists) also lead the NHL. MacKinnon was second with 140 points (51 goals, 89 assists) in 82 matches. In addition to leading the Colorado Avalanche in goals, assists and points, his goals were fourth in the league and his 48 power-play points (10 goals, 38 assists) were second to Kucherov. It was the second time in MacKinnon’s NHL career and second straight season with at least 100 points after he had 111 (42 goals, 69 assists) last season. The 28-year-old center led the league with 405 shots on goal and had a home point streak of 35 matches (77 points, 29 goals, 48 assists) to begin the season. This is the second longest in NHL history behind Gretzky, who had a 40-game run for the Kings in 1988-89. “It’s the consistency in his preparation,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said Tuesday.  “Takes care of his game first. But there’s no question that his leadership has evolved over the eight years that I’ve been with him. I think when you get your game to a spot that you feel comfortable with as a young player and then understand how important winning is and what it takes to get there, then you start trying to help everyone else around you. He’s certainly done that. He’s branched out and evolved as a leader of our team. Some of the things are still very consistent, the way he leads by example, the way he prepares himself and helps prepare our team for our opponents. Those parts of his DNA have always been there, but there’s no question that he’s got a bigger-picture outlook on the game now than he did when I first came.” McDavid was third with 132 points (32 goals, 100 assists) in 76 matches. It was the fourth straight season the Edmonton Oilers captain scored at least 100 points, and the seventh time in his nine NHL seasons. He had 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in his first 11 matches, which had him tied for 107th in scoring. But McDavid had 122 (30 goals, 92 assists) in his final 65, an average of 1.88 points per game. The 27-year-old center is contesting to win the Hart Trophy for the second straight season and the fourth time since joining the NHL for the 2015-16 season. He also won the trophy in 2016-17 and 2020-21.

boyd signs one-year contract with tennessee titans

Tyler Boyd signs with Tennessee Titans on one-year contract

Tyler Boyd’s extended free agency is over. Boyd is packing his bags for a quick trip to the south. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday, that the former Cincinnati Bengals receiver is signing a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans worth up to $4.5 million.  ESPN first broke the news. Boyd’s career with the Bengals ended unceremoniously after a tough final campaign with Cincinnati. His time with them had a few uncharacteristic drops in key moments. It was a sad end to an eight-year run (2016-2023) in which Boyd proved to be a reliable pass catcher (except for 2023). He tallied 513 catches on 763 targets for 6,000 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns.  With big contracts coming up for Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, plus Joe Burrow’s lucrative extension, the Bengals knew they would have to sacrifice retaining Boyd in favour of long-term financial viability. This and the fact that he posted his worst campaign since 2017, the choice was easy, leaving Tyler to find employment somewhere else for the first time in his career.  The Titans have been active in the reciever market this offseason, enticing Calvin Ridley away from the Jacksonville Jaguars and drafting Jha’Quan Jackson in effort to revive the depth chart. Now, Tennessee is attempting to capitalize on Boyd’s availability by buying low on the 29-year-old receiver.  He wil join a squad that includes DeAndre Hopkins and Youngster Treylon Burks, including Ridley, Jackson, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and Kyle Philips. A year after struggling to put together a strong assortment of pass catchers, Tennessee is leaving no stone unturned for coach Brian Callahan’s era.

rival skipper not surprised by athletics breakout

Rival skipper not surprised by Athletics breakout

As the most experienced pitcher for the Oakland Athletics, Alex Wood felt it important that he led by example.  Given this goal, Wood’s start to his career with the Athletics had not gone as he planned. Through seven starts, he built a 6.32 ERA, pitched once into the sixth inning and carried 1.98 WHIP that was the second highest behind only Houston Astros’ Hunter Brown (2.20) among the 127 Major League pitchers, with at least 25 innings this season.  Coming off a day where the bullpen had to cover eight innings due to an early exit for Joe Boyle, the Athletics longed for a deep outing. Facing the defending World Series champions, Wood stepped up to deliver his best start yet for Oakland. He had six scoreless innings, permitting only two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.  Wood’s strong effort set the Athletics up for the formula that has worked well for them this campaign. Get a strong outing from their starter, score enough runs early and and it off to a lights-out bullpen.  Although this time, there was problem. Lucas Erceg conceded a go-ahead three-run homer to Corey Seager, after a two-run lead in the eight. This turned out to be the gamechanger in Oakland’s 4-2 defeat by the Rangers on Monday night at the Coliseum. See: Allen solid, but ‘flat’ Cleveland Guardians struggle in field in finale. Erceg, who entered the night afer permitting only two hits and three walks over his last night appearances, started the eight with a leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Josh Smith. That free pass set the modd for an uncharacteristics fram that witnessed the right-hander walk two batters and permit two hits. The most damaging one was Seager’s long ball on a 3-2 changeup with two outs. At the same time, closer Mason Miller was warm in the bullpen.  “They made some moves by pinch-hitting against [Erceg],” said Athletics manager Mark Kotsay. “The Seager at-bat, 3-2 changeup, that’s why he makes [$325 million.] This is a small blip for Erceg. I’ve had nothing but confidence in him. He’s had nothing but success in that situation this season.” Erceg’s blown save will highlighted, especially since it was the Athletics first loss this campaign when leading after seven innings. The offense, was just as complicit for its inability to cash in. Despite securing seven hits, Oakland went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left  Erceg’s blown save will be magnified, given that it was the A’s first loss this season when leading after seven innings. The offense, however, was just as responsible for its inability to cash in. Despite collecting seven hits, the A’s went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base. Their two runs were on a pair of sacrifice flies by Darell Hernaiz in the second and Esteury Ruiz in the fifth.  “We had a chance to add on,” Kotsay said. “Adding on against good teams is what you need to do to put them away. We’ve been able to add on as of late. But tonight, we couldn’t get that support we needed late and it ended up costing us.” On a night where the Athletics blew a chance to close the distance on Texas, which entered first place while Oakland trails by three games, the upside is in Wood finally looking like he does at his best. He moved fast by pounding the zone with 54 of 78 pitches going for strikes and generating lots of weak contact. The average exit velocity of the 17 balls in play against him was only 89.7 mph.  “The biggest thing for me is strikes,” Wood said. “I’m a strike thrower. … That was a big thing for me today. Going in and getting strike one and attacking guys. Usually, when you do that, you get some of those quick outs like we did tonight.” Wood referred to his previous outing last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates as frustrating because he could attack the zone. Pulled after four innings against Pittsburgh, he threw only 53 of 93 total pitches for strikes that night. Alex said he identified a mechnical flaw with his hand positioning, which he corrected before his start at the Yankee Stadium on April 25. This fix held him go 5 ⅔ innings of one-run ball. The issue happened again in last week’s start, but he fixed it for Monday’s start.  “My hands had gravitated more towards the mid-line or in front of the mid-line of my body,” Wood said. “Going into New York, I had to make sure [my hands] were behind my mid-line. Last start, they kind of gravitated back toward where they had been. Today, I kept that in the back of my mind throughout the outing. It helped my changeup a lot and command in general. Hopefully, it’s something we can keep carrying over and keep filling up the zone.”

This honour has been awarded annually since the 1952-53 season. Wembanyama is also the third player to get that honour with San Antonio. He joins winners like David Robinson (1989-90) and Tim Duncan (1997-98).  In the 2023-24 regular season, Victor Wembanyama led all rookies in points (21.4), rebounds (10.6) and blocks (3.6) per match. Additionally, he ranks fourth in assists (3.9) and second in steals (1.2) per game. He is the second rookie to lead all league players in blocks per game in a season, joining others like Manute Bol (1985 -86). Wembanyama and Bol are the only two rookies to lead the NBA in total blocks in a campaign since blocks were first recorded in the 1973-74 season.  Victor became the first player to average up to 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in fewer than 30 minutes per game in a season. He is the first player to gather 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 3-pointers made in a season.
