Mark Sanchez hit with felony battery charge after Indianapolis altercation

Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez now faces a felony battery charge, causing serious bodily injury, prosecutors announced Monday. The new charge, which carries a possible one- to six-year prison sentence, adds to the misdemeanor counts Sanchez was already facing from a late-night altercation in downtown Indianapolis over the weekend. According to a police affidavit, Sanchez, reportedly smelling of alcohol, confronted a 69-year-old truck driver near a hotel loading dock. The confrontation turned violent when the driver allegedly used a knife in self-defense, stabbing Sanchez multiple times in the upper torso. Both men were hospitalized; Sanchez remains in stable condition. “Once we received new information about the victim’s medical condition, it became clear that additional charges were needed,” Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears said. Sanchez’s attorney declined to comment. A scheduled court appearance was moved to Nov. 4 as the investigation continues.

Chargers’ Keenan Allen Becomes Fastest Player in NFL History to 1,000 Receptions

Los Angeles Chargers star Keenan Allen reached a historic milestone Sunday, becoming the fastest player in NFL history to record 1,000 career receptions. Allen hit the mark during the Chargers’ 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders, snagging a 4-yard pass from Justin Herbert in the second quarter for catch No. 1,000. The 32-year-old wideout achieved the feat in just 159 games, breaking Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison’s previous record of 167 games. Keenan Allen finished with five catches for 58 yards, bringing his career total to 1,003 receptions, which moves him past Hines Ward into 15th place all-time. “It’s an honor to be mentioned with legends like Marvin Harrison and Hines Ward,” Keenan Allen said postgame.

Former Ravens DL and Super Bowl XLVII Champion Arthur Jones Dies at 39

Arthur Jones, a former Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman and Super Bowl XLVII champion, has died at the age of 39. The school and the Ravens did not disclose a cause of death. “Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encountered,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said. “His big, bright smile, infectious energy and eternal positivity continuously uplifted others.” Jones, a fifth-round pick in 2010, played four seasons with the Ravens, recording 8.5 of his 10 career sacks in 2012-13. He was a key contributor in Baltimore’s 2012 Super Bowl run, famously sacking Colin Kaepernick just before the Superdome’s power outage and recovering a fumble in the victory over the 49ers. He later played for the Colts (2014-15) and Washington (2017). At Syracuse, He was a dominant defensive tackle with 38.5 tackles for loss — still a school record for an interior lineman — and was a two-time first-team All-Big East selection. Jones was the older brother of former UFC heavyweight champion Jon and NFL defensive end Chandler, a four-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner with the Patriots.

Saints Lock In Superdome Lease Through 2035, Eye Future Super Bowls

The New Orleans Saints will keep calling the Caesars Superdome home for at least another decade. Owner Gayle Benson and Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry announced Thursday a lease extension through 2035 for the state-owned stadium. The deal replaces the previous lease, which was set to expire in 2030. The agreement also includes four five-year options that could keep the Saints in the Superdome through 2055. “With this agreement, we’re paving the way for more Saints victories, more Super Bowl memories, and more economic growth for Louisiana,” Landry said. A key benefit of the extension is that it allows New Orleans to bid for the 2031 Super Bowl. The city most recently hosted the big game on Feb. 9, 2025, when the Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22. The Superdome, opened in 1975, has hosted eight Super Bowls and undergone nearly $1 billion in repairs and upgrades since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “The Superdome is not just a landmark in the world of sports; it’s a symbol of our state’s resilience and pride,” Landry said. “This extension represents a continued and valued partnership … that demonstrates our intent to be here and fully committed for many decades,” Benson added. As part of the deal, the state also extended its 10-year lease for offices in Benson Tower, the high-rise next to the stadium that Benson owns.

Seattle Sounders identity fuels Leagues Cup title: “It was beautiful”

As a player and coach, Brian Schmetzer has won over a dozen trophies with Seattle Sounders FC. But with Seattle’s 3-0 takedown of Inter Miami CF in Sunday’s Leagues Cup 2025 final at Lumen Field, the longtime manager might have led the Sounders to their most impressive feat yet. Taking on a Herons’ side rife with superstar talent, led by arguably the sport’s best-ever player in Lionel Messi, Seattle lifted their first-ever Leagues Cup title with a commanding performance. “The success that [majority owner Adrian Hanauer] and I have built should not be discounted,” an emotional Schmetzer said at his postgame press conference. “Because when we came, we were a USL team and he had a vision to get the team into MLS, and we had big owners and an ownership group and things. But he’s the one who does the things behind the scenes, and it’s a credit to him. “The organization from top to bottom, the coaches, everybody, they deserve this,” Schmetzer added. “The fans deserve this win. Because it’s been 20-some odd years since I’ve been with the club, and then you sprinkle in a couple years when I was 17, 19, 20 – so it might even be 25. I’ll have to do the math. But credit to everybody in the organization.”

The New York Mets outfield depth has taken another major hit

Jesse Winker suffered a setback in his rehab that will effectively end his season,, while Tyrone Taylor was recently placed on the injured list with a hamstring issue. Jose Siri also remains sidelined, still working his way back from a fractured tibia. With multiple outfielders down, the Mets may be forced to dip into the free-agent market. Two names who could make sense are Eddie Rosario and Alex Verdugo, both of whom spent time with the division-rival Atlanta Braves earlier this year. Eddie RosarioA 10-year veteran, Rosario has only appeared in five games across two teams this season. However, his postseason pedigree is well documented. During Atlanta’s 2021 World Series run, Rosario earned NLCS MVP honors, hitting .560 with three home runs in that series alone. Across 30 career postseason appearances, Rosario owns a .289 batting average with five homers and 14 RBIs — exactly the kind of experience the Mets could use if they make a playoff push. Alex VerdugoVerdugo, meanwhile, played 56 games for the Braves this season before being released following the reinstatement of Jurickson Profar. While he struggled in Atlanta, batting .239 with 31 strikeouts, he still showed flashes of his contact ability, collecting 46 hits. Like Rosario, Verdugo has October experience, appearing in 25 postseason games with the Red Sox and Yankees, where he posted a .256 average with two homers and 14 RBIs. Neither Rosario nor Verdugo represents a long-term solution, but both could provide the Mets with much-needed outfield depth and valuable postseason know-how.

Astros Enter September in Tight AL West Battle After Up-and-Down Summer

The Houston Astros have endured a season of highs and lows, yet remain atop the American League West as the calendar turns to September. Houston holds a three-game lead over the Seattle Mariners and a 4.5-game advantage on the Texas Rangers following Labor Day. With Texas charging and plenty of baseball left, securing another division crown will be no easy task. The Astros’ cushion was built on a strong early stretch, particularly in June, but the club stumbled through the summer. They finished just under .500 in both July and August, continuing a season marked by streaky play. Even so, Houston remains among baseball’s elite and a contender for another deep October run. In MLB.com’s final regular-season power rankings, writer Will Leitch placed the Astros at No. 10, down one spot from the previous week as the New York Yankees jumped ahead.

MLB Insider Expects ‘Many Teams’ to Pursue Bo Bichette

The Toronto Blue Jays have not been shy about making bold moves to secure their core. Most notably handing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a record-shattering 14-year, $500 million contract earlier this year. That deal quickly shifted the spotlight to Bo Bichette, the All-Star shortstop now approaching free agency. Bichette has long been viewed as a candidate for an extension, but talks with Toronto have never materialized into a deal. With his contract set to expire at season’s end, he is expected to be one of the most sought-after names on the market. Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly recently predicted that the Blue Jays will do everything they can to keep Bichette in Toronto. “The Blue Jays retained Bichette last offseason when many thought they should blow up their core. He’s rewarded them by rebounding from a disappointing 2024 season and leading the league in hits for a team that looks like a World Series contender,” Kelly wrote. “The Blue Jays have struggled to attract free agents in recent years but remain aggressive spenders, and they will do what it takes to re-sign Bichette.” Still, rival executives expect plenty of competition. Bichette’s age, production, and position make him an ideal target for multiple big-market clubs, setting the stage for a bidding war if Toronto cannot secure his signature before free agency opens.
