Kyler Murray is one step away from coming back as soon as Sunday to play against the Cleveland Browns. The Arizona Cardinals quarterback joined the team’s Friday injury report with a questionable designation as he tries to conclude his return from ACL surgery.
Coach Jonathan Ganon while speaking to reporters said all his quarterbacks had a good week of practice, but he wanted to see how they performed through Friday’s session before revealing any more information. With practice complete, Murray was officially tagged as questionable, which gave Gannon the option to play safe and give the quarterback another week off, or allow him return to the field for the first time sinc he suffered an ACL tear toward the end of the 2022 season.
“We gotta make sure we’re doing the best thing for the team and the best thing for Kyler,” Gannon said. “He’ll have a big part in saying to me and to us, ‘Hey, I’m ready to go, I want to play football.’ And we’re still working toward that.”
With regards to when Gannon may make the decision on who will start, he left that answer to imagination, although the Cardinals would need to activate Murray off the physically unable to perform list on Saturday if he is going to play.
“Probably on the plane, or in the morning,” Gannon replied when asked when he might find an answer.
If Kyler Murray sits out that game, the duty will fall on rookie Clayton Tune, who impressed the team enough in the preseason to secure a spot on the active roster as a backup. Gannon discussed Tune’s accuracy and efficient operation of the offense during practice as reasons for why he feels confident about the rookie if Arizona proceeds with him.
Still, Cardinals fans anticipate seeing Murray back on the field in uniform. Sunday might be the moment they have all been waiting for.
