The hosts frustrated Diego Simeone’s teams throughout a cagey affair that lacked attacking flair. The opening half offered little in the way of entertainment with neither side registering a shot on target.
Though Alavés appeared happy to settle for a point, striker Kike tried to break the deadlock in the second half with a powerful effort. However, chances remained scarce and the game fizzled out without a breakthrough.
The result lifts Alavés three points above the relegation line, while Atletico remain in third.
