The Houston Astros have optioned right-hander Spencer Arrighetti to Triple-A Sugar Land, the club announced Monday.
Arrighetti, 26, was limited to seven starts last season due to a fractured right thumb and right elbow inflammation, posting a 5.35 ERA over 35 and a third innings. He struggled this spring as well, allowing six runs over eight innings in three Grapefruit League relief appearances.
With Arrighetti heading to Triple-A, Lance McCullers Jr. will fill the fifth spot in the rotation. Houston’s Opening Day rotation will consist of Hunter Brown, Mike Burrows, Cristian Javier, newly signed Tatsuya Imai and McCullers.
The Astros plan to move to a six-man rotation once the season gets going, which means Arrighetti could find his way back to the big leagues before long. Starting the year in Triple-A will allow him to stay stretched out as a starter, putting him in position to slot into the rotation in mid-April when Houston faces a stretch of 13 consecutive games.
