Mikel Arteta has defended Arsenal’s set-piece approach as his side prepare to face Everton in a key Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Gunners go into the game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen and currently hold a seven-point lead over Manchester City in second place. Arsenal are chasing their first league title in 23 years and will be looking to add three more points to their tally.
Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Arteta paid tribute to Everton boss David Moyes, a man he credits with shaping his career. “He changed my career after my decision to go back to Spain. He brought me to Everton and a lot of incredible things we shared together,” the Arsenal manager said.
Arteta also took time to praise Newcastle following their Europa League display against Barcelona. “Barcelona is one of the exciting teams to watch. They face Newcastle, intense, so good in transition. Huge credit to Newcastle,” he added.
The Arsenal boss then turned his attention to the ongoing debate around his team’s corner tactics, which have drawn criticism from rival managers and fans alike. Arteta was unapologetic, suggesting the rules already exist for a reason.
“That’s why there are the rules. Don’t want to see long throws? Make it so you can’t take longer. The biggest issue is man-to-man. If you say you cannot man-to-man, you will have a different league,” he said.
